About the Organization:

The Barrie Area Native Advisory Circle (BANAC) is an Indigenous governed, Indigenous led regional social planning and development organization. The BANAC service region now covers Simcoe County, Muskoka, and York region. BANAC works in cooperation with Indigenous communities and non-Indigenous organizations to address community-identified priorities through coordinated planning, implementation and evaluation. BANAC has a mandate to support the continued promotion of Indigenous lifelong learning and community wellness through self-determination and community participation. 

BANAC offers many innovative programs and services including Aging Well Senior Supports, Bebminot Family Wellness, the Biinoojinsauk Child Care Centre, Maapii Enjii Zaagi Gaazwad and the Mamaway Wiidokdaadwin Indigenous Interprofessional Primary Care Team.  Mamaway Wiidokdaadwin offers a wholistic approach to wellness that includes traditional healing practices in primary care, community clinics, addiction and recovery services, counselling programs, midwifery, land-based healing programs, and community health promotion. 

About the Role:

This position operates within an Indigenous-led and Indigenous-governed organization that is accountable to the communities it serves. Work is grounded in the principle of Indigenous Health in Indigenous Hands, ensuring that all programs and services are developed, delivered, and evaluated under Indigenous governance structures and community direction. In alignment with Indigenous and provincial standards, the organization upholds excellence in care, accountability, and compliance while centering on Indigenous knowledge systems, cultural safety, and self-determination in health and social service deliverables.

This position is being posted in response to an existing vacancy at the Barrie Area Native Advisory Circle.

This position is a full-time permanent.

As part of Mamaway Wiidokdaadwin’ s Chronic Disease Prevention team, the Registered Dietitian (RD) will provide nutritional assessment, counselling, and develop wholistic, integrated care plans for Indigenous peoples and their families across the North Simcoe Muskoka region.

The RD role integrates clinical nutrition practice with Indigenous knowledge and food systems as part of an Indigenous Interprofessional Primary Care Team. The RD will work closely with diabetes educators, foot care providers, physicians, nurse practitioners, social workers, mental health and wellness counsellors, Traditional Healers, and community health representatives to support wholistic wellness addressing the mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical health needs of Indigenous communities.

The RD is responsible for delivering nutrition care across the lifespan, including diabetes education, chronic disease prevention and management and food security support, while contributing to program planning and health promotion initiatives at the community level as required. The RD will focus on adapting and integrating clinical practice with respect for Indigenous ways of knowing, food sovereignty, and Indigenous pillars of wellness.

The RD conducts diabetes and lower limb risk assessments and screening, develops and delivers individualized and group self-management education (including nutrition, physical activity, lower limb health, blood glucose monitoring, and insulin/medication management), supports clients in goal-setting and self-management planning, and monitors and adjusts care plans in collaboration with the interprofessional team.

ROLE RESPONSIBLITIES:

• Provide individual and group nutrition counselling/recommendations focused on chronic disease prevention and management (e.g., pre-diabetes, type 1 and type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease and anyone at risk for complications related to diabetes)


• Participate as an active member of the interprofessional care team, including attending case conferences, development of integrated care planning and collaborative and shared decision making.


• Integrate traditional and knowledge of Indigenous food systems into nutrition education and care planning


• Support community-identified priorities around food security and food sovereignty (e.g., community gardens, hunting/fishing/harvesting programs, food box initiatives)


• Adapt clinical nutrition tools and resources to be culturally relevant and accessible (including for varying literacy levels and languages)


• Contribute to program development, health promotion initiatives, and community events


• Maintain accurate clinical documentation in accordance with professional and organizational standards


• Support data collection and evaluation as required


• Receive patient phone calls and provide consultation and follow up appointments as needed


• Collect accurate and comprehensive patient assessment and information and ensuring accurate and timely documentation in the EMR (electronic medical record)


• Complete necessary forms and documentation required to facilitate care for patients (ie: reports, referrals, forms etc.)


• Build trust-based relationships with clients, families, and community members, recognizing the impacts of colonization and systemic barriers on health and food access.

What You Bring:

• Registered Dietitian with the College of Dietitians of Ontario in good standing is required


• Bachelor's of Science in Nutrition or equivalent required


• Minimum 3-5 years working in clinical practice. Community based experience is preferred.


• Membership with Dietitians of Canada is preferred


• Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) designation an asset


• Teaching and experience facilitating treatment groups an asset


• Experience working in Indigenous communities is considered a strong asset.


• EMR (Electronic Medical Record) experience an asset (PS Suites)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Work is typically performed in BANAC clinics, offices and / or in community settings. This role is required to provide both on-site and in-office support.


• Regular travel to meetings and communities is required; access to a personal vehicle is required.


• Reliable Vehicle – Regional Travel Required.


• Regular overtime work may be required from time to time.


• Low to moderate exposure to noise in the work environment.


• Regular exposure to a moderate level of tension and anxiety due to deadlines, competing political pressures, and the competing needs and demands for limited resources.


• BANAC work site locations are periodically exposed to smoke due to the burning of sacred medicines: tobacco, sweet grass, sage and / or cedar.

• Valid Class G Ontario Driver’s License is required


• An up-to-date clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required


• An up-to-date clear TST result
