The Registered Nurse will be involved with the coordination of comprehensive care for children and youth within the pediatric oncology program. The Registered Nurse serves as a central point of contact, coordinating and facilitating the patient’s care needs across the continuum of their cancer journey. The Registered Nurse functions as a key point of contact and care coordinator, facilitating communication and continuity of care. The nurse assesses and responds to patient needs, coordinates investigations and supports care transitions.  The Registered Nurse provides ongoing patient and family education throughout the stages of the patient’s treatment journey and is knowledgeable in oncological innovative therapies and clinical trials.

Pediatric Oncology within Acute Children's Services encompasses an inpatient and outpatient pediatric component. This component includes acute tertiary and subspecialty oncology medical and surgical care for children aged 0-18 years from the Central-West region within a family-centered environment. The hematology oncology pediatric team involves the care of children from hospital to home in all settings in the Children's Hospital including 3B, an inpatient hematology oncology unit; and 3F, an ambulatory medical day unit with a full spectrum of pediatric hematology oncology clinics.

 Days/Evenings, Weekends, Holidays

• Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse

• Recent (2 years) pediatric medical and oncology experience in a tertiary care setting, within the last 3 years 

• Current BCLS certification, PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) Certificate

• Current APHON Biotherapy and Chemotherapy Provider Course Certification 

• Current knowledge of the nursing care and disease process for children, family-centered care, family roles and structures as affected by acute and chronic illness, growth and development from infancy to adolescence, both normal and abnormal, chronic and acute illness, pain management, palliative care, and death and dying 

• Demonstrated skills in physical and psychosocial assessment specific to the pediatric population 

• Demonstrated competence in the care of the above pediatric populations including\: chemotherapy administration, vascular access, cardiorespiratory monitoring, medication administration and other clinical skills for pediatric patients 

• Experience and participation in clinical research 

• Experience in development of education and programs and materials with the healthcare team for children with cancer and their families

• Demonstrates knowledge, skill and ability in health teaching for pediatric patients and their families specific to the needs of the above population, including healthcare for specific diseases, procedural preparation and discharge teaching 

• Ability to communicate with children and their families under stressful conditions and collaborate and work within an interdisciplinary team 

• Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal skills 

• Demonstrated leadership and delegation abilities and the ability to organize and coordinate patient and family-centered care with other members of the healthcare team 

• Demonstrated ongoing professional development and commitment to corporate initiatives 

• Demonstrated ability to adapt to rapid change in patient condition, length of stay, and workload status
