Community Engagement Specialist (British Columbia) - Work from Anywhere in Canada

Wood Environment & Infrastructure Solutions is currently seeking a Community Engagement Specialist as key team member in our growing Human Environment team in British Columbia.

About the Human Environment Team

Wood’s Human Environment team is a diverse group of social researchers that work collaboratively across Canada. Working together in an interdisciplinary environment, we study the interactions between human populations and the natural and physical environments in project-specific contexts. This includes a wide range of industrial, government and Indigenous clients. Our services include social and economic baseline research, socio-economic impact assessments (including GBA+ analysis, land and resource use, visual aesthetics and impacts on Indigenous Rights), socio-economic effects monitoring and management, communication and engagement with public stakeholders, government agencies and Indigenous Nations and Peoples as well as Indigenous Knowledge studies. Working with Wood’s Canadian Director of Social Inclusion and across geographies and disciplines, our Human Environment team leads the advancement of social inclusion internally and with our clients to strengthen the social aspect of ESG throughout our projects.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to British Columbia’s Environmental Services Manager, you will:

• Participate in a range of social inclusion projects related to resource and infrastructure development through developing, coordinating and implementing communication and engagement programs with Indigenous Nations and People, communities and stakeholders.
• Manage projects related to stakeholder/Indigenous engagement.
• Develop communication and engagement plans including identification of interested parties, conducting stakeholder mapping, and outlining associated methods and activities.
• Implement in-person and virtual events, such as event planning, facilitation, workshops, focus groups, interviews, open houses, etc., that effectively inform and engage.
• Manage and respond to grievances, issues, concerns, and feedback in collaboration with project teams. This includes the proactive identification of social risks and solutions.
• Incorporate engagement results / inputs into technical discipline reports and impact assessments.
• Complete required regulatory documentation for engagement programs in compliance with Federal, Provincial and local regulatory requirements
• Contribute to relationship development internally and externally, with Indigenous Nations and Peoples, communities, stakeholders, and clients.
• Elevate the knowledge and success of our technical professionals through participation in Wood’s Global Technical Expert Network, speaking events (conferences, webinars), networking events, and publications
• Contribute to technical proposals, presentations and reports
• Contribute to business development initiatives with internal and external clients
• Liaise and work effectively with other Wood technical specialists, clients, government agencies, Indigenous communities and stakeholders
• Other duties as assigned

• University degree (graduate level preferred) in Social Sciences, Economics, Indigenous studies or related field
• At least 5 years relevant experience
• Knowledge of and experience meeting Canadian impact assessment requirements (federal, provincial)
• Experience in planning, managing and undertaking respectful and appropriate engagement with Indigenous Nations and Peoples in British Columbia
• Experience in planning, managing and undertaking engagement with diverse communities and stakeholder groups
• Strong relationship building and culturally informed conflict resolutions approaches, including ability to facilitate challenging conversations to resolve complex issues
• Training and/or certification in engagement and facilitation (such as IAP2, IAF), considered an asset
• Experience working on mining, oil and gas, infrastructure, and/or linear projects (transportation, transmission lines, pipelines)
• Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills (English; French and / or an Indigenous language is an asset)
• Strong reporting and presentation skills
• Desire to provide excellent client service and commitment to continuous improvement
• Ability to work independently while encouraging collaborative teams working in a strong entrepreneurial environment
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage and prioritize several assignments at one time and deliver high quality products on time and within budget
• Fluency with the use of Microsoft 365 for Business products including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, OneDrive
• Valid driver’s license
• Ability to travel for work from time to time
