The NRC has an important role within the Government of Canada's Defence Industrial Strategy, accelerating research and innovation, and helping Canadian businesses develop leading-edge technologies for civilian and military use.
With expertise across fields such as transportation, quantum science, medical countermeasures and advanced manufacturing, the NRC is hiring to drive the development of national sovereign defence capabilities. The following role will support the NRC’s contributions to defence priorities.
We are looking for Research Council Officer, Autonomy Core, to support our Aerospace Research Centre. The Research Council Officer would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.
The Aerospace Research Centre is expanding its capabilities in full-scale aircraft autonomy and is seeking a Research Council Officer, Autonomy Core, to help develop the next generation of autonomous flight systems. The successful candidate will apply strong software development expertise to design, implement and integrate autonomy software, including mission management and supervisory control functions. Working within a multidisciplinary team, they will contribute to software architecture, translate research concepts into operational solutions, support simulation and flight-test activities, and help advance autonomous aviation technologies that support Canadian innovation and commercialization.
The successful candidate will apply strong software development expertise to design, implement and integrate autonomy software, including mission management and discrete-event supervisory control functions for autonomous aircraft.
Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:
A Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. Practical exposure to autonomous systems, discrete-event system implementation, or real-time embedded software is expected.
A Master’s, or PhD degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering would be considered an asset.

Secret clearance
A thorough security clearance process will be applied.

This position is classified as a Research Council Officer (RCO), a group that is unique to the NRC. Candidates are remunerated based on their expertise, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience relative to the requirements of the level. The salary scale for this group is vast, from $64,739 to $183,010 per annum, which permits for employees of all levels from new graduates to world renowned experts to be fairly compensated for their contributions.
NOTE: Please note that the full RO/RCO salary scale has five levels. Salary determination will be based on a review of the candidate’s expertise, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience relative to the requirements of the level. As such, the initial salary could be within another level of the RO/RCO salary scale (i.e. above or below the intended level for this position).
