We are looking for a Research Officer (RO) with a background in clean energy systems integration, energy storage, smart grid and microgrids to support developing and deploying resilient, low-emission, and intelligent clean energy systems for remote and Arctic operations. By advancing applied research and technology development in distributed energy integration, control, and optimization, this position will reinforce NRC’s leadership in supporting Canada’s energy transition and national energy security objectives. The selected candidate would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.
You will be working on projects performing research to plan and execute research, development, and demonstration (RDD) projects for the NRC’s clients and collaborators. This involves both administrative and technical responsibilities within the NRC’s operational and policy framework (project management, hazard prevention program, Treasury Board directives, etc.) to safely and efficiently deliver client-driven outputs.
You will be working on specifying and integrating various microgrid hardware, software, and/or complete systems, data collection, formatting, and analysis, operating microgrid power systems, including generators, battery/inverter systems, supervisory controllers, etc…
You will support the advancement of the microgrid lab infrastructure and operating microgrid power systems; writing and following safe operating procedures; evaluating operational performance of electrical and thermal systems and troubleshoot when necessary.
You will be involved in the development of new research proposals (with multi-stakeholders), management of research projects, maintenance of research partnerships with external academic, industrial and government collaborators and supervision of students and vendors.

Experience in one or more aspects of distributed energy resources (DERs) for electrical generation and energy storage, smart grid or microgrid, such as, but not limited to, energy source and storage devices such as engine-based generators, batteries, electrochemical devices, photovoltaic systems, fuel cells, capacitors, load banks, and grid connections.

The intent of this hiring action is to staff this position at the ASRO to ACRO level, which is an early to mid-career level position with a salary range of $83,985 to $139,608.
NOTE: Please note that the full RO/RCO salary scale has five levels. Salary determination will be based on a review of the candidate’s expertise, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience relative to the requirements of the level. As such, the initial salary could be within another level of the RO/RCO salary scale (i.e. above or below the intended level for this position).
