The Opportunity


We are seeking a full-time permanent Security Officer whose primary responsibilities will be to provide security for Park assets, together with safety for visitors and staff. Under the daily direction of the Head Security Officer, with overall policy direction from the Security Manger, officers will ensure that the Park and Zoo has available a wide range of professional proactive and reactive security services. Such Services include crime prevention strategies, conflict resolution, problem solving, investigatory assistance, emergency medical response, crisis intervention, enforcing of Park and Zoo regulations and monitoring and reporting on provincial and federal statutes.


Security Officers will follow all APC guidelines and established policies and procedures. In doing so they will not take any adverse personal safety risks in the course of duty, while protecting APC’s assets and Image.


Responsibilities 



  • Patrol the park and zoo 24/7 (vehicle; foot; bike).

  • Ensure restricted access to areas that are closed (nature playground, Leo Mol, duck pond, etc.). Escort off premises if needed.

  • Ensure buildings/areas are locked and secured at night. Clearing areas if required.

  • Unlock buildings and/or allowing access to certain areas for employees, construction workers, events, third party companies, etc.

  • Answer security phone on a daily basis providing assistance.

  • Give directions.

  • Traffic control—within parking lots and within park boundaries.

  • Emergency medical response / First-Aid and or CPR / AED.

  • Assisting WPS in escalated situations.

  • Follow Missing persons protocols.

  • Mail runs for different departments within APC.

  • Daily shift reports.

  • Incident reports (D3 reports).

  • Use and maintenance of access cards as a means of monitoring access and egress.

  • Use of camera system to evaluate threats and incidents under view.


Required Qualifications and Experience



  • Must currently hold a valid Manitoba Security Guard License.

  • Must hold a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver's License.

  • Current First Aid and CPR/AED certification recognized by Labour and Regulatory Services - Workplace, Safety and Health

  • 18 years of age or older

  • Minimum of Grade 12 or equivalency

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to work with staff at all levels in a team environment with minimum supervision.

  • Previous experience or education in a related field.

  • Good knowledge of computer programs including Outlook and Microsoft Office.

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • Candidates must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position (documentation of physical capacity may be required).


Physical Demands and Working Conditions



  • Working all shifts: days, evenings and nights.

  • Standing, walking, cycling for extended periods of time.

  • Able to act in a swift, responsible manner in emergency situations.

  • Physically demanding and repetitive tasks.

  • Must be able to perform physically strenuous work outdoors in all types of weather.

  • Combination of sitting, standing, pushing, lifting, kneeling and walking for extended periods.

  • Capable of handling heavy loads of up to 25-40 lbs.

  • Must be able to push/pull 50-200 lbs.

  • Noise exposure from operations, mechanical equipment and animal vocalizations.

  • Exposure to strong scents from animals and chemical products.

  • Contact with plants and animals which may cause allergic reactions.
