Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) & Vice President, Corporate Services, this position is responsible for the provision of commercial legal advice to the Northwestel and additional responsibilities as required by the CFO, in order to ensure that all material policies, plans and contractual undertakings are in compliance with legal requirements, that all legal risks and liabilities are identified and effectively dealt with, and that the corporate goal of excellent and effective legal representation is met.

Specific Accountabilities
Draft, review and negotiate commercial legal agreements associated with the telecommunications industry such as retail and wholesale services agreements, and procurement agreements, identifying and minimizing potential legal risks / liabilities.
Provide advice and formulate opinions primarily on commercial legal issues.
Interact with the Bell Canada Legal Department for the provision of non-commercial legal services.
Assist as commercial legal counsel in the resolution of claims advanced by or against the Company.
Provide presentations and information to the executive, senior management, and employees of the company regarding topical legal issues.
Direct the efforts of, supervise and manage the relationship between outside counsel and Northwestel to ensure excellent commercial legal representation and cost effectiveness.
Lead the commercial legal team including hiring, performance management and staff development.
Develop standard form commercial agreements relying upon Bell Canada agreements where appropriate.
Responsible for administrative functions including accountability for managing the commercial legal budget.
Participate fully in our organizational health and safety programs, adhering to all safe work practices and procedures and staying focused on continuous improvement. In addition, ensuring all Accident Prevention Program (APP’s) training, all Code of Business Conduct (CoBC) training, and all other Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) training are completed on time.
Perform timely completion of all administrative tasks including, but not limited to time reporting, expense reporting and submission of corporate card statements, as applicable.
Knowledge And Skills Required
Bachelor of laws/juris doctor from a Canadian common law university.
Minimum of ten years’ work experience with five to ten years in the telecommunications industry.
Member of a Law Society in Yukon, Northwest Territories, or Nunavut, with concurrent membership in another provincial Law Society.
Strong knowledge of telecommunications law specifically, and commercial law generally.
Excellent interpersonal, communications, analytical, problem solving and negotiation skills.
Excellent legal drafting and negotiating skills.
Some knowledge of telecommunications regulatory, and consumer marketing law is an asset.
