Position Overview

Under direct supervision and in accordance with established standard operating procedures (SOP’s), the Lab Animal Technician provides primary health care and husbandry to a variety of research animal species. The Lab Animal Technician also assists with or performs technical procedures to maintain lab animal health and provide technical service to animal users in support of approved animal study protocols.


The position is ideal for a person with a Veterinary Technician diploma. The position requires the incumbent have the ability to pay attention to detail, follow SOP’s and/or study protocols and possess keen observation skills. Personnel must be able to work in a team environment and interrelate with diverse client groups including faculty, graduate students, fellows and commercial clients. Previous GLP experience is desirable. The position is required to work assigned weekends, evenings and holidays as needed.


The key responsibility of all staff of the R.O.Burrell Lab is the health and humane care of all animals in the facility while providing quality support to research staff and their projects. This position specifically applies to these goals as they relate to the assuring of health and welfare of animals within the animal colony, general technical duties and the provision of anesthesia/surgical procedures.


The position reports directly to the Manager, R.O Burrell Lab.


Experience


  • Previous GLP experience is desirable.


Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)


  • B.Sc. degree or Veterinary Technician diploma.


Certification/Licensure/Registration


  • CALAS certification as a RLAT.


Qualifications and Skills


  • Ability to determine health status of many different species of research animals as well as appropriate restraint and drug administration techniques for each species.

  • Ability to perform technical procedures and anesthesia on many different species of research animals.

  • Knowledge of CCAC and University requirements pertaining to animal husbandry and welfare.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to use a variety of computer hardware systems and software applications.

  • Ability to be on feet for extended periods of time and lift heavy objects (50 lbs.).

  • Hard working, enthusiastic with a positive attitude. The incumbent must be committed to maintaining high-standards of animal health and welfare.
