Temporary Public Works Operator I

Position Summary:

The Town of Bonnyville is seeking a team-oriented individual for the role of Public Works Operator I. This is a temporary position reporting to the Operations Director or their designate. The incumbent is responsible for the routine maintenance and operation of all municipal services required for Public Works.

Key Responsibilities:

  Safely operates light-duty equipment (mowers, puller packers, light trucks) and heavy machinery (bobcats, backhoes, wheel loaders).

  Performs routine equipment maintenance, including fueling, oil changes, greasing, and washing.

  
  


• 
  

  Performs manual labour duties related to transportation, such as solid waste collection, repairs and maintenance of roadways, sidewalks, street signs and alleyways.

  
  


• 
  

  Role is versatile, supporting Utilities Department, Transportation Department and Landfill operations as needed.

  
  


• 
  

  Supports community events by erecting decorations, holiday lighting, flags, and banners.

  
  


• 
  

  Adheres to all safety procedures and maintains a working knowledge of the OHS Manual and safe work practices.

  
  


• 
  

  Actively participates in hazard identification and near miss reporting.

  
  


• 
  

  Completes and submits all required technical paperwork in a timely and organized manner.

  
  


• 
  

  Conduct snow removal, sanding, and ice control during winter operations.

  
  


• 
  

  Conduct pre-trip & post-trip inspections, reporting defects or maintenance needs.

  
  


• 
  

  Transport materials such as gravel, waste, equipment, and supplies.

  
  


• 
  

  Secure loads, complete logbooks, and comply with transport regulations.

  
  


• 
  

  Interact professionally with the public and co-workers.

  
  

Qualifications:

Education & Certification

• 
  

  Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent.

  
  


• 
  

  Valid Class 3 Q driver’s license with Air Brake endorsement (successful candidate must provide an acceptable driver’s abstract).

  
  


• 
  

  Level 1 Water or Level 1 Wastewater certification (considered an asset).

  
  


• 
  

  Confined Space Entry certification (or a willingness to obtain).

  
  

Skills & Experience

• 
  

  2+ years’ experience operating heavy machinery (bobcat, backhoe, wheel loader, etc.).

  
  


• 
  

  Strong communication skills, including the ability to interpret and execute verbal and written instructions.

  
  


• 
  

  Proven ability to work effectively within a team environment.

  
  

Physical Demands & Working Conditions:

  Ability to lift and carry weights between 15 kg and 25 kg.

  
  


• 
  

  Capacity for frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and walking on uneven surfaces.

  
  


• 
  

  Working in confined spaces as well as at heights (training will be offered).

  
  


• 
  

  Ability to climb stairs and ladders.

  
  


• 
  

  Exposure to extreme weather (heat, cold, wind, precipitation).

  Work around loud equipment, dust, fumes, and landfill materials.

  
  


• 
  

  Uneven ground, slippery surfaces, and construction hazards.

  
  

Schedule Requirements:

• 
  

  Typically 40 hours per week.

  
  


• 
  

  Must be willing and able to work overtime, weekends and on-call shifts  as required.

  
  


• 
  

  Commitment to pursuing further certification levels in utilities, parks, or roads.
