Apprentice Heavy Duty Mechanic

POSITION TYPE: Full-Time
HOURS OF WORK: 40-hour work week, as per schedule

HOURLY RATE $39.27 per hour, Pay Grade 9 - Schedule “B” Outside Employees
Pay progression: The position will start two pay grades below the journeyman rate and, upon successful completion of each year of the apprenticeship, will progress by one pay grade until the full rate is achieved.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION 

• Grade 12 Diploma or GED


• Registered apprentice in Heavy Duty Equipment Technician or eligible to register as an apprentice in British Columbia

LICENSES / CERTIFICATES 

• Valid Class three (3) BC Driver’s License with Air Endorsement

EXPERIENCE 

• Completion of second year apprenticeship program in either Automotive Mechanics, Heavy Duty Mechanic, Commercial Transport Mechanic, or Metal Fabricator (Fitter)

SPECIFIC SKILLS 

• Knowledge of hydraulic, electric, and brake (air/hydraulic) systems


• Demonstrated ability with computerized maintenance, diagnostics, and repair


• Ability to understand electrical and hydraulic schematics and manuals


• Knowledge of municipal, provincial and federal standards and regulations


• Demonstrated ability to exercise considerable tact, courtesy and diplomacy in dealing with members of the public, other agencies and staff


• Excellent organizational and time management skills


• High degree of initiative and sound judgment


• Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision


• Demonstrated ability to perform all of the duties outlined in a safe manner following established City policies and procedures and WorkSafeBC requirements

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS 

• Available to work various schedules, weekends, holidays, day, evening, and night shifts as outlined in the Collective Agreement


• Ability to respond to emergency callouts and undertake responsibilities specific to Disaster Services

  A complete set of mechanic hand tools must be supplied by the incumbent
