Building Maintenance Worker (Canada Summer Job)

The Facilities Maintenance Worker/Building Maintenance Worker (Canada Summer Job) will play a crucial role in maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient environment for the organization’s staff, volunteers, clients and visitors. This summer student position provides an excellent opportunity for hands-on experience in facilities management within a non-profit setting. The role includes a combination of routine maintenance and cleaning duties to ensure that the physical environment supports the organization's mission and day-to-day operations. The successful candidate will develop professional and technical skills and will: 

• Gain practical experience in facilities management within a non-profit organization, learning about the challenges and solutions involved in maintaining a safe and welcoming environment. 


• Develop technical skills in areas such as building maintenance, safety protocols, and equipment management. 


• Work in a mission-driven environment, gaining insight into how the condition of facilities impacts the overall effectiveness of a non-profit organization and its impact on the community.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assist in performing general facility maintenance tasks, including minor repair work, maintenance of equipment, installations and performing preventive inspection of systems relating to building mechanics to ensure that all equipment is in good working order.  


• Perform general cleaning tasks to maintain a clean and safe environment, including cleaning common areas, offices, restrooms, and maintaining supply levels for cleaning products and equipment. 


• Assist with moving furniture, setting up rooms for events or meetings, and organizing spaces to support organizational activities. 


• Work closely with the Facilities team, as well as other departments, to meet operational needs and support a positive, collaborative work environment.


• Contribute to the organization’s mission by maintaining a welcoming and functional space that enhances the services provided to the community.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

• Strong interest in facilities management, building maintenance, and working in a non-profit environment. 


• Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and moving, as well as general cleaning and maintenance. 


• Basic technical knowledge or willingness to learn about maintenance practices, including plumbing, electrical systems, and repairs. 


• Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow safety guidelines and procedures. 


• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a flexible and positive attitude. 


• Strong communication skills to interact with staff and fellow team members in a professional, respectful manner. 


• Previous experience in a maintenance, custodial, or facilities-related role is an asset, but not required. 


• A genuine passion for contributing to a mission-driven organization and improving the physical environment in a community-based non-profit.
