About this Opportunity



The Ulnooweg Education Centre (UEC) is seeking passionate, caring, and enthusiastic individuals who are committed to youth leadership, land-based learning, and the sharing of Indigenous knowledge grounded in Etuaptmumk and Netukulimk.



The ideal candidate is studying in, or has experience in, education, science, social work, recreation, environmental studies, or a related field. Join our Summer Programs Team and spend your summer supporting high school–aged Indigenous youth from across Atlantic Canada through immersive, STEAM- and culture-based camps held throughout Mi’kmaw and Peskotomuhkati territories.



Our summer camp programs bring together Elders, Knowledge Keepers, scientists, and community leaders to create meaningful learning experiences rooted in culture, curiosity, and connection. As a Camp Counsellor, you will play a key role in creating safe, supportive, and inspiring spaces where high-school aged youth can learn, grow, and be themselves.



In keeping with our commitment to Indigenous leadership and community-led programming, preference is given to Indigenous applicants. We warmly welcome Indigenous candidates to self-identify in their application, if they feel comfortable doing so.



Position Details



  • Term: 16 weeks (May 4, 2026 – August 28, 2026)

  • Status: Seasonal / Full-Time

  • Location: Multiple sites across Nova Scotia and New Brunswick

  • Travel: Required (includes three 10-day overnight camps)



Your Role


Working alongside Camp Leaders and the Seasonal Program Coordinator, you will help deliver UEC’s summer programming and support youth through multi-day camp experiences.



You will:



  • Lead and support recreational, cultural, and educational activities

  • Create welcoming, inclusive, and culturally respectful spaces

  • Build positive relationships with youth and support their learning journey

  • Promote safety and well-being during all activities and excursions

  • Support daily camp operations (meals, schedules, routines)

  • Collaborate with fellow counsellors to keep programming on track

  • Assist with documenting and celebrating camp impacts (photos, stories, reflections)



What We’re Looking For


We welcome applications from motivated candidates who bring kindness, openness, and a positive attitude to their work, and who are eager to learn, contribute, and grow in a community-centred environment.



You may be a great fit if you have:




  • Experience working with children or youth (camp, school, coaching, mentoring, etc.)

  • An interest in Indigenous education, culture, and community-led programming

  • Ongoing or completed post-secondary education (asset)

  • Experience working with Elders and Knowledge Keepers (asset)

  • Emergency First Aid & CPR certification (asset)

  • Class 5 driver’s licence (asset)



We also value experience in:



  • Outdoor recreation and camping

  • Canoeing, kayaking, swimming, or lifeguarding

  • Youth leadership, student clubs, or volunteer work

  • Mi’kmaq language and cultural knowledge



Conditions of Employment



  • Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check

  • Legally entitled to work in Canada

  • Between 15–30 years old at start of employment (funding requirement)



Physical Requirements



  • Ability to walk and stand for extended periods on uneven terrain

  • Ability to participate in moderately active outdoor programming

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25–30 lbs

  • Stamina to remain attentive and responsive during long days and overnight schedules



Working Conditions



  • Work takes place in outdoor, seasonal camp environments

  • Exposure to varying weather, insects, wildlife, and uneven terrain

  • Long and irregular hours during camp sessions, including evenings and overnights

  • On-call availability during overnight camp sessions, as required

  • Travel within Nova Scotia and New Brunswick

  • Emotionally engaged work supporting youth through growth and challenge

  • Collaborative team-based environment

  • Fast-paced, dynamic environment requiring flexibility and calm leadership
