Job Description - Town of Coaldale | Summer Bylaw Intern


Position Summary

The Coaldale District Municipal Enforcement (CDME) Intern will work as a sworn Bylaw Officer for the Town of Coaldale. The successful candidate will investigate and enforce bylaw offences including unsightly properties, barking dog complaints, dogs off-leash complaints, parking offences, and other municipal regulations. The intern will also conduct Automated Traffic Enforcement (ATE).

Key Duties & Responsibilities



  • Promote positive public relations at all times

  • Conduct enforcement and investigations in accordance with Provincial Statutes and Municipal Bylaws

  • Deploy Automated Enforcement Devices as directed, including assigned dates, times, and locations

  • Complete reports and maintain accurate notes as required

  • Present evidence in court proceedings when necessary

  • Complete basic cleaning and inspection of equipment

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Working Conditions



  • Position is scheduled for 30 hours per week from June 1 through August 28, 2026

  • Manual dexterity required for computer and equipment use

  • Lifting or moving up to 100 lbs may occasionally be required

Health & Safety



  • All employees must comply with the Town of Coaldale Safety Program

  • Ensure all operations are performed safely and in accordance with Town policies and Alberta Occupational Health and Safety legislation

  • Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times in accordance with safe work procedures






Requirements



  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary educational institution

  • Ability to successfully pass a security clearance and Professional Standards Evaluation

  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean driving record (non-GDL)

  • Positive reference from a current or former employer and/or professor

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Professional appearance, conduct, and positive attitude

  • Ability to interact effectively with individuals of all ages and abilities

  • Demonstrated compassion, empathy, and understanding when required

  • Willingness to work flexible schedules and participate in special events

  • Ability to prepare reports, interpret bylaws and provincial statutes, and present written documentation

  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with Town staff, management, and external law enforcement and regulatory agencies
