Job Description:
Position Purpose summary:
The Family Services Worker assists in organization of client/family assistance. The primary focus of this role is Foodbank Intake, recruiting participants and organizing applications for Scotian Glen Camping Ministries, and assisting with the Christmas Campaign as directed.
Accountabilities:
Client Services:
- Conducts initial intake assessments; determining the clients’ immediate needs and provides appropriate support. Including, but not limited to
- Evaluation of client/protection issues
- Feed Nova Scotia Link 2 Feed intake
- Monthly Reports
- Referral to POH case worker
- Scotian Glen Camping ministries
- Identifies when the client needs to be referred to the CFS Program supervisor for complex family services support.
- Identifies clients spiritual needs; provides appropriate support including prayer and connecting with Sydney Community Church spiritual care.
- Maintains confidentiality and keeps accurate client files and statistical records.
- Assists in the organization, maintenance and general cleanliness of the family services and food bank area.
- Contributes to the Seasonal and Christmas campaign under the direction of CFS program supervisor.

- Packing orders and assisting in the foodbank
- Meet the Feed Nova Scotia truck on scheduled days.
- Meeting the clients and taking care of the foodbank
- Responsible for avoiding food wastage by ensuring that the freezer/fridge foods go in the appropriate freezer / fridge and storing the donations
- Weigh all food donations and ensure that proper documentation is completed for recording.
- Unload the truck donations and put in appropriate sections – freezer, fridge, pantry, etc.
- Work and maintain the daily and monthly reports.
- Maintain the Standards and Procedures
- Meet the Feed Nova Scotia truck on scheduled days.
- Other duties as assigned.
FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:
- Effective distribution of food bank donations
- Recruiting campers for Scotian Glen Camping Ministries and Divisional Camping events (children, youth, and families)
Working Conditions:
- Working environment is typically in the office in generally agreeable conditions
- Travel within Cape Breton Regional Municipality– using a Salvation Army program vehicle
- The work requires frequent amount of standing, walking, bending, repetitive lifting, and the ability to lift up to 39 pounds with no assistance from others.
Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- High School diploma, plus additional education in the social work or human services field
- Able to provide Criminal Background Check screening and Vulnerable Sector Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
- Need a Valid Driver's License
- Food Handlers Certificate
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:
- Up to one year related experience
- Respect and understanding of The Salvation Army - its mission, culture, and values

Skills and Capabilities:
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Understanding for individuals of diverse social and cultural backgrounds
- Good computer skills with working knowledge of MS Office
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
This is for a one year temporary position
Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $16.50 to $18.59 with a maximum of $22.31.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
