The global New Technology & Innovation (NT&I) team is at the center of audio technology support in Harman’s innovative products. Consumer Audio Lab Denmark (CALD), the NT&I Denmark team, is seeking a talented and motivated student to join us for a three-month project on building a Tuning Tool for Generating Room Impulse Responses.

Description

Room Impulse Responses (RIRs) capture the acoustic characteristics of a room or an environment, such as reflections, reverberation, and echoes. They are essential in AR/VR applications for creating immersive audio experiences for users. RIRs can be obtained by measurement or simulation. In this project we consider simulations where RIRs are generated via mathematical models according to room geometry and surface material.

The goal of this project is to build a tuning tool for generating RIRs that includes spatialization of early reflections according to a set of configurations (the geometry of a room, the absorption characteristics of the room, positions of sources, positions of receivers, order of reflections). This work is a further development based on our preliminary work, which contains two modules, i.e., early reflection module and late reverberation module.

The main tasks involved in this project are listed as follows.

Calculate the direction in terms of azimuth and elevation of each early reflection with respect to the center of the head of a listener. Spatialize each reflection using the FABAIN HRTF database. Add real-time signal processing capability to the system that enables the possibility to listen to the acoustics of the space under design.

The project will be performed in Kvistgård and is expected to run through the summer 2024. You will also have the chance working with an experienced research group in Advanced Acoustic Engineering team based in Shenzhen.

Qualifications

We are looking for a motivated individual with the following qualifications.

• Master’s student with good grades.
• Good knowledge of audio signal processing.
• Strong programming skill in Python.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Excellent written and spoken English, ability to work as part of an international team.

Even though the work is in applied research area, we expect an analytical mindset, ability to learn quickly, work independently, and being able to identify problems and find solutions.
