About Capalo AI
Capalo AI is a fast-growing energy technology company scaling software that actively operates large-scale battery energy storage across Europe. Our platform is already live in production, supporting real assets in real energy markets as renewable generation and grid flexibility needs accelerate.
As we grow, we're building robust systems that handle real-time data, market interactions, and high-reliability control flows. Engineers at Capalo work close to production systems, solving practical scaling and reliability challenges where software decisions have direct physical and commercial impact.
About the Role
We are looking for an Asset Control Engineer to join our Production team. You will own the software components that handle communication between our VPP and physical assets — the protocols, control logic, and tooling that make it possible to connect and operate battery systems and renewable production reliably.
Where our Asset Integration Engineers handle individual integration projects with PPC (Power Plant Controller) providers, your focus is on the platform side: building and maintaining the systems, documentation, and validation tooling that make every integration faster, more reliable, and more autonomous.
Key Responsibilities
Communication Protocols & Control Logic
Own and develop the VPP components responsible for asset communication over IEC 104, MQTT, and related protocols
Design and maintain protocol-level interfaces that work reliably across different PPC vendors and hardware configurations
Documentation & Integration Standards
Maintain and improve the technical documentation used by PPC providers connecting to our VPP
Define communication specifications, signal lists, and integration requirements that external vendors follow during onboarding
Keep documentation aligned with evolving TSO requirements and protocol changes across markets
Validation Tooling & Test Frameworks
Develop tooling used by Asset Integration Engineers and PPC providers to validate that hardware and software behave as expected end-to-end
Build automated test suites for TSO requirements such as Grid Code Compliance tests and ancillary service prequalification (FFR, FCR-D, aFRR, mFRR)
Create reusable validation frameworks that reduce manual effort and catch issues before they reach production
Platform Development & Reliability
Improve the reliability and observability of the control path between Zeus VPP and connected assets
Identify and fix systemic issues surfaced by integration projects, turning one-off fixes into platform improvements
What We’re Looking For
There’s no single background that fits this role. You might come from energy tech, IoT, or industrial control systems. You might be a backend engineer looking to work closer to physical systems. What matters is strong engineering fundamentals and a willingness to learn the domain.
Strong software engineering fundamentals and experience building production backend systems
Experience with industrial communication protocols (MQTT, IEC 104, ICCP, Modbus, or similar)
Ability to write clear technical documentation aimed at external engineering teams
A sharp debugging instinct and genuine curiosity about why things fail
Strong ability to learn new technical concepts quickly
Nice to Have
Understanding of control theory concepts
Experience with SCADA, EMS, VPPs, or other industrial control platforms
Familiarity with BESS or other distributed energy resources
Experience with Django
Background in electrical engineering or physics
Experience with AWS or other cloud environments
Team Context
The Asset Control Engineer sits within the Production team and works closely with Asset Integration Engineers, who manage individual integration projects with PPC providers. While Asset Integration Engineers act as project managers driving vendor relationships and day-to-day integration coordination, the Asset Control Engineer focuses on the technical platform: the control software, protocols, documentation, and tooling that the integration team and PPC providers rely on.
Feedback from integration projects flows back to you as requirements for new features, fixes, and improvements to the platform.
