At IQM, we build world-leading quantum computers for the well-being of humankind. We design systems to tackle computational challenges beyond the practical limits of classical machines. Our work sits at the edge of science and engineering. It's complex, demanding, and deeply collaborative. We turn deep research into reliable, full-stack systems that drive discoveries in fields like medicine, energy, and technology, reshaping how the world computes.
Join the team that gives quantum a heartbeat.
As a Quantum Hardware Engineer, you will plan, assemble and run experiments in our laboratories in Espoo. Working alongside physicists and specialist engineers, you will help develop a reliable measurement service for teams designing and manufacturing components for IQM’s quantum computers.
Your duties will combine practical laboratory work with developing new measurement capabilities. From installing a device in a cryostat to automating measurements and investigating unexpected results, you will help make experiments more repeatable, reliable and easier to interpret. You will work with experienced colleagues who can support your development while giving you responsibility for your own experiments and designs.
Plan, design and assemble cryogenic experiments
Install devices in cryostats, carry out cooldowns and run electrical measurements.
Set up measurement instruments and electronics racks, and develop scripts for automated data acquisition and analysis.
Diagnose experimental problems, investigate measurement results and document common failure cases.
Develop standard measurement procedures to serve fabrication and packaging teams.
Contribute mechanical and electrical designs, working with colleagues to have them manufactured, assembled and tested.
Help keep the laboratory organised, with clear documentation and well maintained tools, equipment and supplies.
An MSc of PhD in physics or a related field, or equivalent practical expertise.
Practical experience planning and setting up experiments in a cryostat, including installing devices and assembling the experimental setup.
Experience working with cryogenic systems reaching approximately 4 K or below.
A sound understanding of experimental physics and low temperature instrumentation, including vacuum systems.
Experience with precision DC or microwave measurements, and the ability to reason about measurement quality and troubleshoot problems.
An understanding of basic mechanical design and how to translate experimental requirements into a practical assembly.
The ability to solve problems independently, seek support when needed and document your work clearly.
Full-stack quantum computing: From quantum hardware to software layers and beyond, we build across the full-stack.
High-performance playground: We aim high, and we know sustainable performance only works when life outside work does too—hybrid setups, flexible hours.
Never the smartest: You won’t always be the smartest person in the room. Neither will we. Expect to learn constantly - from each other and beyond with IQM’s Learning Hub, LinkedIn Learning, and a team-based L&D budget.
Approachable leadership: Flat hierarchy, direct access. Feel free to approach any leaders. They're friendlier than they look!
The sweet spot: Big enough to matter. Small enough to move fast. Growing between a startup and a corporation. We’re in the phase where top performers get noticed.
Bigger than IQM: Our people build know-how for the entire quantum ecosystem. We publish papers, run hackathons, and help shape a market that's still being defined.
