Commodity Trader

We are strengthening our Commodities Trading Desk within the Financial Risk Management Department. The desk manages the Group’s global exposure to bulk raw materials—principally iron ore, coking coal and dry-bulk freight—and base metals including zinc, aluminium and tin. It supports ArcelorMittal’s steelmaking, mining and commercial activities through hedging, portfolio optimisation and market execution.

We are looking for a market-driven Commodities Trader with strong conviction, sound judgement and the ability to turn market insight into measurable value. The right candidate will combine a strong understanding of physical commodity flows with derivatives expertise, be comfortable taking well-assessed risk and manage dynamic portfolios within a robust governance and risk management framework.

In volatile and strategically important commodity markets, the Commodities Trader will:

• Actively manage portfolios across iron ore, coking coal, dry-bulk freight, zinc, aluminium and tin, covering short-dated and longer-term exposures.


• Develop and recommend hedging, spread and portfolio strategies for Group entities, internal stakeholders and senior management.


• Identify market opportunities across outright prices, grades, locations, freight routes, time spreads and cross-commodity relationships, translating clear trading views into disciplined execution within approved limits.


• Contribute directly to desk performance through rigorous fundamental, technical and quantitative analysis, portfolio optimisation and risk-adjusted decision-making.


• Execute financial commodity transactions using futures, swaps, options and other approved instruments, and support physical transactions where relevant to the Group’s flows.


• Work closely with Mining, Sourcing, commercial teams and other Group entities to understand exposures, improve pricing flexibility and identify value-accretive physical-plus-financial solutions.


• Produce concise market intelligence, exposure analysis and actionable recommendations covering supply and demand, inventories, trade flows and steel-market dynamics, logistics and macroeconomic drivers.


• Ensure daily desk continuity and respond rapidly to market developments, execution needs and internal stakeholder requests.


• Operate in full alignment with ArcelorMittal’s Financial Risk Management Framework, internal controls and compliance standards.


• Represent the Group professionally with exchanges, brokers, banks and market counterparties, while contributing to a best-in-class trading culture.

Profile we are looking for:

• Master’s degree or equivalent in finance, economics, engineering, mathematics, commodities, supply chain or a related discipline.


• At least 4 years of experience in physical and/or financial commodity markets, ideally gained within a trading house, mining company, steel producer, bank or major industrial group.


• Strong knowledge of iron ore, coking coal and dry-bulk freight and/or LME base metals, particularly zinc, aluminium and tin; expertise spanning both bulks and metals is a strong advantage.


• Sound understanding of physical commodity economics—including indices, grades, quotation periods, freight, logistics and basis risk—and of futures, swaps and options.


• Proven ability to read markets, form independent views and act with conviction under pressure.


• Strong analytical and quantitative mindset, with a clear focus on performance, risk-adjusted returns and portfolio optimisation.


• Entrepreneurial spirit, intellectual curiosity and appetite for taking ownership in a high-performance trading environment.


• Ability to build trusted relationships with Mining, Sourcing and commercial stakeholders, external counterparties and colleagues across geographies and cultures.


• Clear, concise communication skills, including the ability to explain complex market views and risk strategies to senior stakeholders.


• Fluent English; French or another language relevant to global commodity markets is a plus.
