Job Description - Product Engineer (RFQ)

Job Description – Product Engineer (RFQ) 

Position Summary

The Product Engineer (RFQ – Technical) is responsible for evaluating customer product requirements from a technical feasibility and manufacturability perspective for EMS (Electronics Manufacturing Services) operations. The role ensures that product designs are optimized for manufacturing, identifies technical and process risks during the RFQ stage, and supports smooth transition into New Product Introduction (NPI) and production.

The engineer will work closely with customers, sales, process engineering, sourcing, and manufacturing teams to provide accurate technical assessments, engineering effort estimation, and manufacturing readiness evaluation.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Evaluation of RFQs

  • Review and analyze customer -provided technical data including:
    • Bill of Materials (BOM)
    • Gerber files
    • Schematics and assembly drawings
    • Test requirements and specifications
    • Customized part drawings
  • Evaluate product complexity, manufacturability, and technology requirements.
  • Identify technical risks, process constraints, and special manufacturing considerations during RFQ evaluation.
  • Support engineering feasibility analysis and provide inputs for NRE and cycle time estimation.

Process & Manufacturing Feasibility

  • Assess manufacturing feasibility for:
    • SMT (Surface Mount Technology)
    • THT (Through -Hole Technology)
    • Mixed technology PCB assemblies
    • Box build and system integration
  • Define manufacturing process requirements, tooling needs, fixtures, and special process requirements.
  • Evaluate DFM (Design for Manufacturability) and DFA (Design for Assembly) compliance.
  • Coordinate with manufacturing and process engineering teams for production readiness.

Component Engineering Support

  • Analyze BOMs for:
    • Component lifecycle status (active/obsolete)
    • Package compatibility
    • Alternate component identification
    • Technical substitutes based on form -fit -function validation
  • Support sourcing and supply chain teams with technical clarification for components and alternates.

NPI (New Product Introduction) Support

  • Support transition of projects from RFQ stage to NPI and production.
  • Assist in prototype builds, pilot runs, and initial production setup activities.
  • Validate engineering changes, ECNs, and design updates prior to production release.
  • Coordinate with quality and manufacturing teams to ensure successful product introduction.

Documentation & Customer Support

  • Prepare technical feasibility reports and engineering assessments.
  • Maintain engineering documentation and RFQ evaluation records.
  • Support customer discussions for technical clarifications and manufacturability improvements.
  • Collaborate with internal cross -functional teams to ensure timely RFQ response and project execution.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Technical Skills

  • Strong knowledge of:
    • PCB fabrication and PCB assembly processes
    • SMT, THT, reflow soldering, and wave soldering processes
    • Gerber interpretation and PCB design fundamentals
  • Good understanding of:
    • IPC standards (IPC -A -610, IPC -2221, etc.)
    • DFM/DFA principles
    • Electronic components, packaging, and assembly technologies
  • Good process knowledge in EMS manufacturing will be an added advantage.

Tools & Systems

  • Familiarity with:
    • CAD tools such as Altium, OrCAD, etc.
    • Gerber viewers and PCB analysis tools
    • PLM/ERP systems for engineering data reference
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and engineering documentation.

Soft Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem -solving abilities.
  • Good communication and coordination skills.
  • Ability to work in cross -functional teams and manage multiple RFQs simultaneously.
  • Detail -oriented with strong technical evaluation capability.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree/Diploma in Electronics Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience in EMS/PCB assembly manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Exposure to NPI processes and RFQ engineering activities is an advantage.
