Job Description - Senior Scientist I /Senior Scientist II, Documentary Standards ( Foods)

Brief Job Overview


This is a professional, highly technical, non-supervisory position that supports the food ingredients program unit team (PUT) within USP’s Global Science and Standards Division (GSSD). The incumbent reports to a local management position at the India site as well as functionally reporting to a management position in the Foods PUT in the US. The incumbent will support the development and technical stewardship of Food Chemicals Codex (FCC) standards, other scientific products, outreach and awareness (in India, US, and internationally), and internal strategic initiatives. These activities require the ability to identify and critically evaluate published information on chemical analysis of food ingredients, regulatory and safety reviews of foods, and data and supplier documents to support development of standards and guidance documents. The successful candidate may develop proposals, coordinate, and lead specific technical studies related to food analysis. The incumbent may present technical talks to academics, the food industry, and regulators to advocate for the work of the program, to solicit feedback, and to support program goals related to awareness and capacity building. The incumbent will work collaboratively with industry stakeholders, the Food Ingredients Expert Committee, the PUT, and other USP program units and departments.


How will YOU create impact here at USP?


The Sr. Scientist I/II has the following responsibilities:



  • Provide scientific expertise to USP’s Foods PUT with a focus on identifying, developing, and supporting food standards and other fit-for-purpose solutions.

  • Perform critical evaluation of technical data related to food quality and purity including working closely with internal and external laboratories on analytical method development, validation, and data analysis.

  • Works with USP staff, the USP Food Ingredient Expert Committee (FI EC), subcommittees (SC), and Expert panels (EP), external stakeholders as related to Food Ingredient monograph and RS development.

  • Supports in the preparation of data packages and briefing materials to present to the FI EC and other expert bodies; manages projects appropriately and ensures impeccable work-product delivery.

  • Foster collaboration and communication with other USP program units and departments,

  • Keep abreast of global trends and developments in related scientific fields and share learnings with managers and colleagues.

  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders from industry, academia, scientific organizations, and regulatory agencies.

  • Assist and guide Expert Committees and related expert bodies to support the development of FCC standards and other program products.

  • Performs other related duties in support of the Foods Program Unit as assigned.

  • Senior Scientist I: Ph.D. in Food Science, Food Chemistry, Food Technology, Analytical Chemistry or allied field and 7-10 years or MS in Food Science, Food Chemistry, Food Technology, Analytical Chemistry or allied field and 11-13 years, respectively, of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of experience and education may be substituted.

  • Senior Scientist II: Ph.D. in Food Science, Food Chemistry, Food Technology, Analytical Chemistry or allied field and  10-13  years or MS in Food Science, Food Chemistry, Food Technology, Analytical Chemistry or allied field and 13-15 years, respectively, of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of experience and education may be substituted

  • Candidates must have experience related to food safety, food quality, or analytical chemistry as well as outstanding written and verbal communication skills in English.

  • Ability to review, analyze, and interpret and report on data from various analytical tests such as from HPLC, GC, LC/MS, GC/MS, IR, Raman, UV-Vis, NMR, ICP-MS, AA, etc.

  • Experience in developing, validating, using, or evaluating food analytical methods

  • Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically with technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Experience in working directly in or with the food industry, such as experience with food quality systems, regulatory affairs, and supply chain management


Additional Desired Preferences


 



  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple concurrent, complex projects with minimal direction and a history of successful timely project management

  • Experience applying food regulations from local or international regulatory bodies, and collaborating with scientific standards organizations is a plus

  • Ability to rapidly and expertly assess complex technical issues in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to embrace change. Adaptable, willing to learn, strong interpersonal and technical presentation skills; strong knowledge of MS Office and related products.

  • Ability to operate independently where appropriate, yet understands when to escalate issues and how to establish effective working relationships

  • Ability to work well with diverse employees and customers in a cooperative and friendly manner

  • Able work flexible hours when needed
