Job Description - Associate IT Automation Engineer

Are you ready to bring your automation expertise to a site where every system you support helps deliver life-changing medicines to millions of patients? Join us in Athlone and play a key role in shaping the IT/OT landscape of one of Novo Nordisk's most important manufacturing sites. Apply today for a career where your work has real and immediate impact.

Your new role
As our new Associate IT Automation Engineer, you will own and manage IT/OT work packages that keep our Athlone site running at the highest standards of quality and reliability. Working closely with internal stakeholders and external third-party service providers, you will establish and deliver project plans, implement the Novo Nordisk target architecture, support Operational Readiness activities, and become a key part of the local IT support team for sitewide commercial operations.

Day-to-day your tasks will include:

  • Owning and delivering defined IT/OT work packages end-to-end, ensuring alignment with scope, schedule, quality and compliance requirements in line with application CoE deployment agreements

  • Managing external vendors and system integrators, overseeing milestones, performance and acceptance criteria

  • Supporting the delivery, integration and lifecycle management of automation systems such as PLC, SCADA and MES, ensuring system reliability and performance

  • Maintaining and improving process control systems through monitoring, troubleshooting and execution of maintenance activities – with future participation in an on-call rotation to support 24/7 production

  • Investigating incidents and deviations, performing root cause analysis and driving continuous improvements in system performance and operational efficiency

  • Ensuring adherence to GxP, regulatory requirements and automation standards, including change control, validation and documentation

  • Collaborating across IT, engineering and operations while championing a quality-first mindset aligned to the Novo Nordisk Way

Your new department
In Global Manufacturing & Supply, we cover the full value chain from drug and device development to marketed Novo Nordisk products. We are more than 30,000 colleagues across the globe with the shared responsibility of scaling molecules, processes, devices, and products, dedicated to supplying life-saving medicines to the patients who need them most.

At our Athlone site, you will join a collaborative IT/OT team supporting sitewide commercial operations and operational readiness activities. We work hand in hand with engineering, operations and external partners to ensure our automation and control systems are reliable, compliant and ready to meet current and projected customer, business and regulatory requirements. It is an environment where ownership, technical curiosity and teamwork come together to deliver real impact for patients.

Your skills & qualifications
We are looking for an autonomous, solutions-focused engineer who thrives in a regulated manufacturing environment and enjoys translating business needs into operational reality. You will bring with you:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field; PMP certification is a plus

    • A minimum of 1-3 years' relevant experience within the pharmaceutical or biotech industry, or alternatively 5+ years of engineering experience in process-based manufacturing, utility and/or packaging systems

  • 3–5 years' experience in Automation, IT or OT, including delivery of project work packages and working with external vendors or third-party system integrators

  • Exposure to manufacturing or regulated environments (pharma preferred), with demonstrated ability managing application implementations in a GMP environment a plus

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a thorough understanding of how to interpret customer business needs and translate them into application and operational requirements

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with peers, managers, subject matter experts and vendors

  • A highly adaptive mindset, comfortable working independently and as part of a cross-functional team
