We are not seeking agency assistance for this vacancy. Thank you for respecting our recruitment process.
The Role
As our Staff Software Engineer, you will be the most senior hands-on technical leader within the engineering function, tackling our most complex and strategically important challenges. You will take ambiguous problems from discovery through to production, shaping architecture, influencing technical direction and setting the engineering standard across the organisation.
You will spend the majority of your time designing scalable systems, writing high-quality code, reviewing critical implementations and solving technically demanding problems. A key focus will be modernising our platform, leading the evolution away from legacy systems while ensuring business-critical delivery continues at pace.
You will also play a pivotal role in the development of AI-assisted capabilities across claims processing, medical coding and billing automation, helping define the next generation of intelligent healthcare technology.
What You'll Do
Lead the delivery of complex, business-critical initiatives from discovery and architecture through to deployment and ongoing operational support.
Define technical strategy across the platform, including system architecture, service boundaries, APIs, data ownership and legacy modernisation.
Design and develop high-quality software across the full technology stack, from database architecture and backend services through to modern frontend applications.
Set the benchmark for engineering excellence through clean, scalable and maintainable code, rigorous code reviews and technical leadership.
Lead the technical response to production incidents, driving root cause analysis and implementing resilient long-term solutions.
Partner with DevOps to continuously improve CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, deployment practices, observability and platform reliability.
Mentor and develop engineers at all levels, fostering technical growth and raising engineering capability across the wider team.
Shape the design and delivery of AI-powered product capabilities that enhance automation and customer outcomes.
Champion the pragmatic adoption of AI development tools where they demonstrably improve engineering quality, productivity or delivery speed.
What We're Looking For
A proven track record of operating at Staff Engineer level, whether or not that has been your formal title, with demonstrable technical influence beyond your own team or projects.
Deep expertise in PHP, ideally within Laravel-based environments.
Strong experience designing relational databases and working with MySQL.
Solid frontend engineering capability using React or Vue, TypeScript, HTML and CSS.
Exceptional system design skills, including experience delivering complex platform evolution and legacy modernisation programmes.
Production experience with cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure, alongside CI/CD pipelines and automated testing practices.
Strong knowledge of RESTful API design, application security and modern software engineering principles.
Highly self-directed, with the ability to bring clarity to ambiguous technical challenges and lead them through to successful delivery.
Sound engineering judgement, balancing long-term technical quality with pragmatic business delivery.
Experience coaching and mentoring engineers across multiple levels of seniority.
Desirable Experience
Experience within healthcare, medical billing, payments or another highly regulated or operationally complex industry.
Familiarity with modern observability platforms such as Sentry, Datadog or Grafana.
Experience designing, building or deploying AI or LLM-assisted product capabilities into production.
