BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:
The Early Warning and Forecasting Unit in the Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Service plays a critical role in anticipating and mitigating the impacts of food insecurity worldwide. It leads on corporate early warning tools such as the Corporate Alert System, Early Warning Watch List and the FAO-WFP Hunger Hotspots report.
The Unit also advances WFP’s conflict and hunger agenda by providing evidence on how conflict drives food insecurity. In this context, it co-leads with FAO the Monitoring Acute Food Insecurity in Conflict Situations report, which informs the UN Security Council under Resolution 2417 (2018).
To support these efforts, WFP is recruiting a Conflict Analyst with a proven track record of producing analysis on conflict trends and its linkages to food insecurity. The Conflict Analyst will report to the head of the Unit.
ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide in-depth analysis on conflict-induced food insecurity and threat of famine for the annual FAO-WFP joint report to the UN Security Council in line with requirements of the UNSC 2417 Resolution (2018). Support the coordination of the Monitoring Acute Food Insecurity in Conflict Situations report, in collaboration with relevant WFP and FAO technical counterparts. Apply agreed methodologies and the use of information management tools in research and risk analysis; Contribute to identifying innovative ways of using data. Perform other related duties as required.
DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT:
Timely production of risk analysis and drafting of the Monitoring Acute Food Insecurity in Conflict Situations report. More specifically, (1) the drafting an in-depth analysis of a country situation, focusing on the impact of conflict on the civilian population -including displacement-, on food systems and on humanitarian access; (2) the review and provision of recommendations for improvement for the in-depth analysis of another country situation.
