We are currently seeking a Electrical Design Engineer to join our dynamic team in Piove di Sacco (PD), Italy!
Vertiv is looking for an Electrical Design Engineer to develop and maintain the electrical design of CW CRAH units, Thermal Wall applications and chiller platforms within the Thermal Management R&D and Engineering organization. The role is focused on chilled-water computer-room air handling equipment and chiller platforms for data center and industrial thermal applications, including electrical panels, power distribution, protection devices, wiring harnesses, cable routing, field wiring interfaces, component selection, electrical documentation and compliance support. The Electrical Design Engineer will support NPDI, sustaining and engineered-to-order complex projects, working closely with Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Procurement, suppliers, Quality, Service and Product Marketing.
What kind of work will you be doing?
- Develop electrical designs for CW CRAH, Thermal Wall and chiller products, taking responsibility for the sizing and selection of main electrical components, assemblies, protection devices and wiring solutions.
- Create and maintain electrical schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, cable lists, harness documentation, connection guides, bills of material, manufacturing drawings and technical specifications.
- Design electrical architectures for standard and special units, balancing cost, quality, reliability, manufacturability, serviceability, safety, project timing and customer requirements.
- Support electrical panel design, including component placement, heat dissipation considerations, cable management, segregation, grounding, labeling, terminal allocation and access for manufacturing and service.
- Cooperate with Controls Engineering to define control wiring, I/O allocation, sensor and actuator interfaces, communication connections, alarm contacts and connection guides.
- Support Manufacturing Engineering and production plants with clear shop-floor documentation, design-for-manufacturing improvements, assembly feedback, change management and issue resolution.
- Coordinate with suppliers and cross-regional electrical design teams on component selection, panel practices, wiring standards, alternative components, cost reduction and standardization opportunities.
- Analyze and resolve technical issues related to electrical design, including field issues, production non-conformities, component substitutions, obsolescence and product improvement actions.
- Contribute to NPDI deliverables by supporting design reviews, risk assessment, validation planning, prototype build, engineering release, engineering change orders and lessons learned.
- Support electrical compliance activities for CRAH units, including CE, Low Voltage Directive, EMC, machinery electrical equipment requirements, RoHS and project-specific regulatory needs.
- Provide engineering support for ETO-C projects, assessing feasibility, impact on standard platform, costed electrical solutions, lead time and documentation package requirements.
- Promote disciplined use of ECAD tools, PLM processes, standard templates, design checklists and engineering best practices across the CW product line and associated chiller platforms.
Product and Technology Focus
- CW CRAH units and chiller platforms for data center cooling applications, including fans, electrical heaters, humidifiers, dampers, valves, sensors, actuators, controllers, safety devices and power distribution interfaces.
- Thermal Wall applications within the CW product line, including electrical integration for service-corridor installation, high-density data hall airflow architectures and facility interface requirements.
- Electrical panel and field wiring design for industrial data center equipment, including dual power supply strategies where required by project scope, grounding, short-circuit protection, overload protection and safe access to live parts.
- ECAD-based documentation and production deliverables, including electrical diagrams, panel layouts, cable lists, terminal plans, harness information, BOMs, labels, connection guides and PVZ/manufacturing documentation where applicable.
- Compliance-oriented design for industrial CRAH equipment, with attention to EN 60204-1, Low Voltage Directive, EMC requirements, CE marking, RoHS and applicable UL/CSA requirements when specified by project scope.
- Electrical integration between chillers and CW air-cooling equipment, including customer interface signals, BMS connections, alarms, enable/disable logic and project-specific electrical options.
- Chiller electrical design activities, including power distribution, control panel integration, safety circuits, electrical component selection, wiring documentation and manufacturing support.
What will make you successful?
- Technical diploma, bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Design, Automation, Mechatronics or a related technical discipline.
- At least 3 years of experience in electrical design for HVAC, data center thermal equipment, chillers, industrial machinery, electrical panels, automation systems or comparable engineered products.
- Excellent knowledge of Electrical CAD systems, electrical schematics, panel layout, wiring documentation, BOM management and Microsoft Office tools.
- Good knowledge of low-voltage electrical design, component sizing, circuit protection, grounding, cable selection, terminal management, labeling and industrial control wiring.
- Experience with electrical standards and regulatory frameworks such as CE, EMC, Low Voltage Directive, EN 60204-1, UL, CSA and related international electrical standards.
- Ability to understand mechanical and controls interfaces and translate cross-functional requirements into robust electrical solutions.
- Experience supporting production, supplier qualification, alternative component evaluation, cost reduction, change orders and field issue investigation.
- Good attention to detail, structured problem solving, ownership of deliverables and ability to work in a multinational and dynamic engineering environment.
- English: intermediate written and spoken level; availability to travel between the Italian base and production facilities or customer sites when needed.
- Experience with CRAH, CRAC, air handling units, chilled-water thermal equipment, chillers or data center infrastructure products.
- Familiarity with ECAD improvement initiatives, automated reports, 3D panel layout, cable routing, harness documentation and standardized electrical design workflows.
- Understanding of industrial safety architecture, independent protections, monitored contactors, safety thermostats, alarm contacts and control-system interfaces.
- Capability to support value engineering, standardization, modular electrical panel concepts, cross-regional design harmonization and continuous improvement.
- Result-oriented, team player, detail-focused, flexible, well organized and proactive.
