We are currently seeking to fill a Fellowship position with the Geospatial and Intelligence Unit, in the Food Security and Nutrition Analysis service.

The Food Security and Nutrition Analysis service is dedicated to strategically managing WFP’s Food Security Analysis related data, knowledge, and evidence. By aligning activities with WFP’s strategic goals, this service will produce actionable insights that drive evidence-based decision-making and policy development. It focuses on streamlining processes, enhancing quality assurance, fostering innovation, and strengthening data integrity. The service aims to digitalise WFP’s vast operational and institutional knowledge, leveraging AI for efficient data management, and ensuring robust standards for research and beneficiary identity processes. Through strategic partnerships and collaborative initiatives, it will position WFP as a leading authority in food security and humanitarian response, ensuring that resources are directed where they are most needed.

The World Food Programme (WFP) collects and processes vast amounts of data across its global operations, ranging from food security measurement and market analyses to registration data and programme monitoring data. This comprehensive data ecosystem enables WFP to deliver targeted humanitarian assistance and monitor the effectiveness of its interventions.

The use of this information for assessment, targeting and monitoring purposes is based on methodologies enstablished over the past decade. With the growing production of modern data analysis and econometric methods, the organization has an opportunity to deliver towards its objective with increased accuracy and timeliness.

Additionally, facing growing constraints in budget allocation to data collection activities, statistical methods can be adopted to ensure minimization in the loss of statistical power of the indicators and capacity of the datasets to enrich the information at hand.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

Under the supervision of the PGRFG Lead Statistician and in close collaboration with VAM specialists, the incumbent is expected to work on a project which will:

•  Leverage WFP datasets to produce economic and food-security analyses and multiple research papers for submission to international peer-reviewed economics journals, documenting the determinants of food-security dynamics in selected contexts and estimating the causal impact of WFP interventions.

•  Review existing, modern methodologies to complement WFP corporate food-security indicators.

•  Assess the informational content of survey modules and provide guidance for the definition and refinement of food-security indicators.

•  Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) for evaluating and approving the statistical representativeness of indicators.

DELIVERABLES

One draft research paper, intended for submission to an international peer-reviewed economics journal, analysing the evolution of food security in the selected contexts and identifying the causal effects of WFP interventions.

•  One draft analytical report on food security and its root causes in the selected contexts.

•  One draft report or paper on strategies to preserve and enhance the informational power of indicators and to optimise data-collection resources using statistical methods
