Seas of Solutions is a maritime technology company dedicated to making every journey safer, smarter, and more sustainable. Through our brands Kannad Marine, McMurdo, and Netwave, we develop and deliver advanced IT and electronic systems, including Voyage Data Recorders (VDRs) and safety beacons, to customers worldwide.
The role
We’re looking for a Type Approvals Engineer to join our R&D team in Zoetermeer, taking maritime safety products — EPIRBs, PLBs, VDRs, and AIS transponders — through the international certification and type approval schemes that allow them to be sold and used worldwide. This is a hybrid engineering/regulatory role: you'll work hand-in-hand with our software, firmware, and hardware engineers to keep products on track for certification, and build lasting working relationships with the test houses and notified bodies who assess them.
What you will do
Plan and drive the type approval process for new and modified products across the relevant certification schemes (Cospas-Sarsat, MED/Wheelmark, RED, IEC 61097 series, IEC 61996 series, CCS, KC/RRA, SRRC, and other regional maritime and radio approvals as required)
Liaise closely with the development team throughout the design cycle so products are designed for compliance and testability from the outset
Build and maintain strong working relationships with test houses, notified bodies, and certification authorities globally
Prepare and review the technical documentation required for submissions — test plans, technical construction files, declarations of conformity, risk assessments
Coordinate, and where useful attend, compliance testing (EMC, RF, environmental, safety) at internal or external test houses
Own certification schedules, track them against project milestones, and proactively flag risks to launch dates
Interpret evolving standards and regulatory requirements and advise the development team on what they mean for product design
Maintain a certification register tracking approval status, renewals, and expiries across the product portfolio
Support procurement, quality, and commercial teams with certification-related questions for tenders, customer audits, and market access
What you will offer
Experience in maritime safety equipment, marine electronics, or the wider telecom/radio equipment industry
3–5+ years of experience taking electronic or RF products through type approval or product certification processes
Working knowledge of relevant international certification schemes and standards (e.g. MED/Wheelmark, RED, Cospas-Sarsat, IEC 61097/61996 series, or comparable telecom/ maritime/RF frameworks); direct experience with one or more of these is strongly preferred
Strong communication skills, equally comfortable liaising with internal engineering teams and external certification bodies
A track record of building and sustaining professional relationships with test houses and notified bodies over time
Solid technical background (electronics, RF, or embedded systems) that supports meaningful technical dialogue with developers and test engineers
Excellent organizational skills, able to manage several concurrent certification projects and competing deadlines
Strong attention to detail when reviewing technical documentation and compliance evidence
A relevant engineering degree (electronics, telecommunications, or similar)
Fluent English, written and spoken; Dutch is a plus
Why join us
The chance to work on life-saving maritime safety technology
Working alongside an experienced, multidisciplinary R&D team, with direct exposure to product development, regulatory certification, and international partners across the full product lifecycle
A stable, established company with an international customer base, based in Zoetermeer, the Netherlands
Market-competitive salary and pension benefits
A diverse and inclusive working environment
