We are a fast-growing African consultancy seeking a Research Assistant to support BHM's Lead Researcher in research and analysis activities of the consultancy, providing valuable insights and data to inform strategic decision-making and client campaigns.

As a Research Assistant in BHM, you will report directly to the lead researcher, working closely to support research initiatives, data analysis, and delivering strategic insights to clients.

Key areas of responsibility for the role will include:

Research and Analysis

• Conducting comprehensive research on industry trends, market dynamics, and client-specific topics;


• Using both qualitative and quantitative methods in gathering and analysing data from various sources, including online databases, industry reports, and primary research;


• Providing insights and recommendations based on research findings, supporting the development of strategic PR campaigns;


• Assist in the preparation of research reports, presentations, and client deliverables.

Data Collection and Management

• Collecting, organising, and maintaining data repositories, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and confidentiality;


• Developing and implementing efficient data collection methodologies, including surveys, interviews, and focus groups.


• Collaborating with internal teams to gather relevant data for research projects and client campaigns;


• Utilising data management tools such as NVivo, SPSS, R, Dedoose etc., to store, retrieve, and analyse research data.

Competitive Intelligence

• Monitoring and analysing competitor activities, industry news, and emerging trends;


• Preparing competitive intelligence reports, highlighting key findings and recommendations.


• Identifying opportunities and challenges in the competitive landscape to guide PR strategies;


• Keeping the team informed of industry developments that may impact client campaigns.

Using Research Methodologies and Tools

• Staying updated on research methodologies and tools, ensuring best practices are applied;


• Assisting in the selection and utilisation of appropriate research tools and technologies;


• Contributing to the development and refinement of research frameworks and methodologies.

Collaboration and Communication:

• Working closely with the research team and cross-functional teams to support research initiatives;


• Collaborating with colleagues to integrate research findings into client proposals and PR strategies;


• Communicating research insights effectively, both verbally and in written form;


• Assisting in presenting research findings to internal stakeholders and clients.

Person Specification

Educational/Professional Qualifications:

• Tertiary education (e.g. Higher Diploma, Bachelor's) in a relevant field such as market research, communications, social sciences, or a related discipline (required);


• Postgraduate degree or certifications in research methods, data analysis, or a related field (preferred).

Experience:

• 1+ years of experience in research, data analysis, or market intelligence roles;


• Experience in a PR or communications agency setting is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills and Aptitudes

Research Skills:

• Strong research skills, including the ability to gather, analyse, and synthesise information from various sources;


• Proficiency in using research databases, online resources, and data collection tools;


• Familiarity with both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies.

Data Analysis:

• Proficient in data analysis techniques, including statistical analysis and data visualisation;


• Experience with data analysis software and tools such as SPSS, Excel, Tableau, NVivo, Quirkos, R, etc. 


• Attention to detail in data collection, cleaning, and validation.

Analytical Thinking:

• Strong analytical skills, capable of interpreting research findings and drawing meaningful insights;


• Ability to think critically and identify trends, patterns, and implications from data;


• Problem-solving mindset, with the ability to approach complex issues and provide innovative solutions.

Communication Skills:

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present research findings clearly and concisely;


• Strong interpersonal skills, enabling effective collaboration and teamwork;


• Ability to adapt communication style to different audiences, including internal stakeholders and clients.

Organisational and Time Management skills:

• Strong organisational skills, capable of managing multiple research projects and deadlines;


• Ability to prioritise tasks effectively and meet project timelines;


• Attention to detail in ensuring accuracy and quality in research outputs.
