The Role

West Africa Container Terminal is looking for a proactive and safety‑driven Workshop Supervisor who brings strong technical capability, a collaborative approach, and a commitment to keeping our operations running reliably. The successful candidate will supervise day‑to‑day workshop activities, guide mechanics and electricians, and ensure that our container‑handling equipment performs safely and at its best. This role is key to sustaining high equipment availability, supporting operational excellence, and helping the terminal deliver world‑class performance.

Reporting to the Workshop Manager, the Workshop Supervisor ensures efficient maintenance execution, supports continuous improvement, and contributes to a culture where people feel empowered to take ownership, innovate, and grow.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and execute instructions from the Workshop Manager or Shift‑in‑Charge to deliver smooth daily workshop operations.
  • Ensure optimal use of resources—people, parts, and equipment—to maximise reliability and reduce downtime.
  • Supervise the inspection, servicing, and repair of Reach Stackers, Empty Handlers, Forklifts, Trucks and other terminal equipment.
  • Support all phases of maintenance work, including preventive maintenance, breakdown response, refurbishments, and new equipment commissioning.
  • Provide hands‑on technical guidance during equipment breakdowns to help teams diagnose issues quickly and safely.
  • Liaise with maintenance planners and operations teams to schedule equipment for servicing and ensure timely, accurate work requests.
  • Maintain the highest safety standards, promoting safe work practices and ensuring tasks comply with procedures and manufacturer specifications.
  • Oversee Work Orders and job documentation, ensuring accurate reporting on tasks, timelines, materials used, and follow‑up needs.
  • Track labour hours, equipment meter readings, and maintenance schedules; share updates with planners for effective PM scheduling.
  • Identify required spare parts, tools, and materials and ensure proper housekeeping, storage, and tool care using 5S principles.
  • Support new team members through proper onboarding, guidance, and daily toolbox talks.
  • Recommend improvements to enhance equipment availability, efficiency, and workshop processes.
  • Participate in contingency procedures and respond to emergency maintenance as needed on a shift/standby basis.

What We’re Looking For

  • Lean-minded: we are looking for someone who brings a strong mindset of continuous improvement – someone who is naturally curious, committed to solving problems at the root, and driven to make things better every day.
  • Higher National Diploma with relevant technical or vocational training (Mechanical, Electrical, Electronic, or Mechatronics).
  • Trade Test/Certificate and additional training in mechanical/electrical systems, people management, or maintenance processes are an advantage.
  • 3–5 years of experience as a mechanic and/or electrician in ports, mining, steel, manufacturing, or similar heavy‑equipment environments.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, industrial controls, hydraulics, pneumatics, and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret service manuals and technical diagrams.
  • Confident in supervising teams, planning workloads, and maintaining a structured, systematic work environment.
  • Self‑motivated, safety‑conscious, organised, and comfortable making decisions in fast‑paced operational settings.

What We Offer

At APM Terminals, we foster a dynamic learning and training culture that empowers our employees to excel. Our commitment to continuous improvement is driven by LEAN principles, ensuring that every team member has the opportunity to develop their skills and advance their careers. Join us to be part of an innovative environment where your growth is our priority, and experience the numerous advantages of being a valued member of our team:

  • A fast‑paced, collaborative workplace where ideas are valued and shared.
  • Opportunities to contribute to a world‑class maintenance organisation and influence workshop improvements.
  • A strong focus on professional development, including technical training, HSE learning, leadership development, and exposure to reliability engineering concepts.
  • Supportive leadership that prioritises work‑life balance, wellbeing, and a safe, inclusive culture.

If you are passionate about equipment reliability, people leadership, and continuous improvement, and you want to make an impact in one of Africa’s most dynamic terminals, we would love to hear from you.
