Mō te tūnga | About the role

The Cybercrime Unit is a national team within the High-Tech Crime Group. The majority of the team is based in Wellington. Our focus is significant, malicious cybercrime activity such as ransomware, denial of service (DOS), malware and some cyber-enabled crime. We support investigations with technical knowledge and advanced tools and liaise with domestic and international partners with a focus on disrupting cybercrime.

You’ll be working with another Intelligence analyst, helping to build the Intelligence function within the expanding Cybercrime Unit. You’ll also work with the wider Cybercrime Unit, other Police groups, and external cybercrime partners. Experience as an Intelligence analyst is essential; cyber knowledge is preferred but can be learnt by someone with technical aptitude and keen interest. 

This role provides opportunity and challenge for a motivated Intelligence practitioner to help stakeholders gain clarity and make decisions about a complex, cross-cutting crime area. Cybercrime is the most rapidly growing crime type globally, and many crimes now have a ‘cyber’ element. Intelligence clients can be cybercrime investigators, other Police groups, all the way up to Police Executive level. The role reports to the Officer in Charge of the Cybercrime Unit and the work is a mix of strategic, operational, and tactical Intelligence

Key Accountabilities:

• Develop and maintain effective relationships with external and internal stakeholders for the benefit of the wider team.


• Using a range of analytical tools and methodologies and advanced critical thinking skills to draw together information from a range of sources.


• Research and analyse and write strategic, operational and tactical intelligence products.


• Provide insight and foresight on complex problems and issues to effectively influence and inform decision makers.


• Proactively identify emerging or escalating trends in cybercrime.


• Manage competing priorities and demands to deliver timely, relevant intelligence and achievable results for the team.


• Regular peer review and project coaching (Senior Analyst)


• Leading development of people, products and processes (Senior Analyst).

• Experience using Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) to a high standard.


• Knowledge of and/or keen willingness to learn about the field of cyber security and cybercrime.

Whakaritenga motuhake | Special requirements

• Hold the NZ Diploma in Intelligence Analysis (NZDIA) or equivalent or able to complete NZDIA modules early in employment.

To be eligible for this role, you must obtain and maintain a TOP SECRET national security clearance. 

The minimum criteria for this level of national security clearance is:

NZ Citizen who has resided continuously in NZ for the last 10 years, or: 

• A Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in NZ for the last 10 years, or


• A citizen of or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last 10 years: Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, or United States of America, and has a background that can be verified by the NZSIS.

Utu ā-tau | Salary

This position is covered by a collective agreement. Salary is dependant on skills and experience relevant to the role.

Senior Intelligence Analyst will commence between $103,836 and $109,983

Intelligence Analyst will commence between $88,179 and $92,267
