About us

Te Tari Pūreke is Aotearoa New Zealand’s Firearms Regulator. Our Vision is to ensure the possession and use of firearms in Aotearoa is the safest in the world.

To achieve this, Te Tari Pūreke delivers four core functions: effectively implementing the firearms licensing systems; managing the Firearms Registry; educating people to enable compliance with their legislative responsibilities; and promoting the safe possession and use of legitimate firearms.

We are committed to fostering a culture of safe and responsible firearms use, gun ownership and awareness by working collaboratively with the firearms community, our stakeholders, and fellow agencies.

Te Tari Pūreke will become an independent regulatory agency (Firearms Safety and Education New Zealand) later this year.

About the New Arms System and Digitisation Programme

The Programme plays an important role in transforming the way firearms and license holders are regulated in NZ. We started the programme following the 15 March 2019 Christchurch Masjidain attack that tragically killed 51 people in NZ.

Since then, we’ve been setting ourselves up for success to achieve our vision - that the possession and use of firearms in Aotearoa is the safest in the world.

As we look ahead to new challenges based around the emerging priorities from government and expectations from our investors (senior leaders and Ministers) we are resetting the team for future delivery.
