HVAC Mechanical Estimator

Job Brief  

We’re seeking an HVAC Mechanical Engineer to join our Australia-based project team as a Design Estimator. The role centres on pricing HVAC works: interpreting tender documentation, developing design concepts for pricing, and producing accurate, competitive estimates. You’ll use your engineering background to scope systems including direct expansion, chilled water, heating water and ventilation, and to work closely with our in-house design and construction teams. 

Responsibilities 

• 
  

  Prepare complete HVAC estimates and tender submissions, from first review through to final pricing 

  
  

• 
  

  Review tender documents, drawings and specifications, and identify scope, risks, exclusions and design implications 

  
  

• 
  

  Perform quantity take-offs for ductwork, pipework, equipment, insulation and associated services using Bluebeam and PDF XChange 

  
  

• 
  

  Obtain and compare supplier and subcontractor quotations 

  
  

• 
  

  Select and size equipment to support accurate pricing, including DX, chilled water, heating water and ventilation systems 

  
  

• 
  

  Build labour, material, plant and preliminaries pricing, and apply appropriate margins 

  
  

• 
  

  Produce design sketches, concept layouts and zoning diagrams for pricing support 

  
  

• 
  

  Carry out heat load, ventilation and static pressure calculations, and fan sizing, where needed to validate scope and equipment selections 

  
  

• 
  

  Prepare equipment schedules and technical submissions to support tenders 

  
  

• 
  

  Develop written return briefs and tender clarifications for clients based on design scope 

  
  

• 
  

  Collaborate with the in-house design and construction teams to resolve engineering and buildability issues before and after pricing 

  
  

• 
  

  Prepare client-facing presentations and tender summaries in PowerPoint 

  
  

• 
  

  Attend internal and external tender and design meetings via Microsoft Teams 

  
  

• 
  

  Contribute to value engineering and alternative-solution proposals to improve competitiveness 

  
  

Requirements 

• 
  

  Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent 

  
  

• 
  

  Solid understanding of HVAC systems, including DX, chilled water, heating water and ventilation 

  
  

• 
  

  Experience or demonstrated aptitude in HVAC estimating, quantity take-off and tender pricing 

  
  

• 
  

  Experience with equipment selection and system sizing 

  
  

• 
  

  Familiarity with Bluebeam, PDF XChange and Camel 

  
  

• 
  

  Strong attention to detail when reviewing technical specifications and client requirements 

  
  

• 
  

  Strong commercial awareness and numerical ability 

  
  

• 
  

  Excellent written and verbal communication skills 

  
  

• 
  

  Ability to work independently and with remote Australian teams 

  
  

Desirable 

• 
  

  Prior experience estimating on Australian HVAC projects 

  
  

• 
  

  Knowledge of Australian mechanical and building codes and standards

  Experience responding to tender documentation and managing multiple tenders to deadline

  Exposure to subcontractor and supplier management
