Job Description - Senior Accountant (SMSF + BGL 360) | Remote

The Snapshot


You'd be joining an established Australian public accounting firm serving a mixed base of SMEs, high-net-worth individuals, and SMSF trustees. The firm is building out its offshore accounting function for the first time, and this is the first hire into it: someone senior enough to be trusted with real client work independently, and who has the potential to eventually help train and lead the offshore team as it grows.


The work here is task-driven rather than a fixed client list: you'd be handed jobs and run them end to end, across financial statements, tax returns, SMSF-related work, and reporting, without needing to be walked through the process. This role sits behind the scenes, working directly with the Practice Principal rather than fronting client relationships.


This role is based in the Philippines, working hours aligned to Australian business hours.


 


What You'll Actually Do


Client accounting and compliance



  • Manage and deliver end-to-end accounting and compliance work across a portfolio of business clients: financial statements, income tax returns, and activity statements, to a high standard and within agreed deadlines.

  • Perform bank reconciliations, general ledger reviews, and balance sheet reconciliations across client files, ensuring accuracy ahead of Principal review.

  • Manage BAS and IAS preparation and lodgement for business clients, with accurate treatment of GST, PAYG withholding, and superannuation guarantee obligations.



SMSF work



  • Process SMSF accounts using BGL 360: financial statements, member statements, and tax returns, in line with the SIS Act and ATO requirements.

  • Understand how each SMSF ties into the client's overall structure, checking that contributions and pension payments line up correctly across the fund, the company, the trust, and the individuals, and keeping an eye on contribution caps.

  • Coordinate SMSF audit requirements and liaise with auditors to keep audit-related documentation and queries moving.



Practice management and workflow



  • Manage client jobs and workflow within Xero Practice Manager (XPM), keeping tasks progressed and deadlines tracked.

  • Flag any capacity or deadline risks to the Practice Principal early, rather than letting them surface late.

  • Contribute to billing preparation and time recording within XPM.



Process and documentation (as the role grows)



  • Understand how each job is meant to be done well enough that you could document it clearly if needed. This isn't a from-scratch SOP-writing role on day one, it's secondary to getting the work done, but it becomes more important as the team grows and you help train whoever joins after you.


 


What You Need to Bring



  • Substantial experience in public accounting or an accounting firm environment, with genuine hands-on work across companies, trusts, and partnerships, not just individual tax returns or SMSF work alone. This gap matters here specifically: the bulk of the work is business financial statements and compliance, so that experience needs to be real.

  • Demonstrated, non-negotiable experience with BGL 360 for SMSF processing: financial statements, member statements, tax returns, and audit coordination.

  • Advanced proficiency in Xero for client accounting: reconciliations, BAS preparation, financial reporting, and general ledger management.

  • Strong working knowledge of Australian tax compliance, including income tax, GST, BAS/IAS, and superannuation guarantee obligations across a range of entity structures.

  • The maturity and initiative to run a portfolio of work independently, with minimal oversight, rather than needing to be walked through each job.

  • A clear communicator who can explain technical accounting matters simply and accurately, even though this role isn't client-facing.


 


Nice to Have



  • Experience with Xero Practice Manager (XPM) for job management, workflow tracking, WIP management, and billing support.

  • Experience with FYI Docs or a similar document management tool integrated with practice management software.

  • CPA or CA qualification, or meaningful progress toward accreditation.

  • Experience managing or mentoring junior accounting staff, or clear leadership potential backed by a track record of technical excellence.
