Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to join our growing team and support a portfolio of New Zealand clients across accounting, taxation, compliance, and advisory services.
This role is ideal for someone with recent public practice experience who can manage client relationships, prepare complex financial reports, and deliver high-quality accounting services with minimal supervision.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Accounting & Compliance (Primary Focus)
Prepare and review annual financial statements for a diverse client portfolio
Prepare income tax returns for companies, trusts, partnerships, and individuals
Prepare and review GST, PAYE, FBT, and other New Zealand tax filings
Ensure compliance with New Zealand accounting standards and tax legislation
Complete year-end adjustments, journals, and reconciliations
Client Management & Advisory
Act as a primary point of contact for clients
Build and maintain strong long-term client relationships
Provide proactive accounting, taxation, and business advice
Assist clients with financial management, compliance obligations, and business planning
Identify opportunities to improve client outcomes and business performance
Cloud Accounting & Systems
Manage and maintain client accounting records using Xero
Review bookkeeping accuracy and support client system improvements
Assist with onboarding new clients and cloud accounting implementations
Support process improvements and workflow efficiencies across the firm
Team Support & Quality Assurance
Review work completed by junior and intermediate accountants
Provide technical guidance and mentoring where required
Ensure work is completed accurately, efficiently, and within deadlines
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the practice
Tools & Systems
Xero (essential)
Microsoft Excel
New Zealand tax and compliance software
Cloud-based accounting and document management systems
Requirements
Key Requirements
Minimum 5+ years' experience in a public practice accounting firm
Strong knowledge of New Zealand taxation and compliance requirements
Proven experience preparing financial statements and tax returns
Advanced Xero knowledge and practical experience
Strong client communication and relationship management skills
Ability to work independently and manage multiple client engagements
Desirable
Xero Advisor Certification
Experience reviewing and mentoring junior staff
Experience with trust accounting and property-related clients
Exposure to business advisory services and management reporting
