Job Description - Tax Accountant

Key Responsibilities

Tax Compliance

  • Prepare income tax returns for individuals, companies, trusts, and partnerships
  • Preparation of Business Activity Statements (BAS) and Instalment Activity Statements (IAS) returns
  • Assist with basic tax planning, tax adjustments, and reconciliations
  • Support the team in meeting ATO deadlines and maintaining compliance

Financial Reporting

  • Prepare year-end financial statements and supporting workpapers
  • Assist with monthly or quarterly management reports, as required
  • Perform account reconciliations and ensure accuracy of general ledger entries

Experience in Bookkeeping & General Accounting

  • Perform data entry, bank reconciliations, and journal processing
  • Maintain up-to-date and accurate records for all clients
  • General experience in the Microsoft suite of products

Communication

  • Proactive in communicating with business owner directly to provide a professional and responsive service with a focus on building trust and reliability
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills
  • Actual experience working and communicating directly with an Australian Accounting Firm Owner

Workpapers & Compliance

  • Prepare clear, accurate, and well-supported workpapers that substantiate tax returns, adjustments, and financial statement items
  • Strong attention to detail and analytical thinking to prepare accurate workpapers, reconcile accounts, and support tax calculations and lodgements.
  • Good technical tax and compliance knowledge, including understanding Australian tax rules, financial statement support, and the relevant checklist/process requirements.

Software Use

  • Work with Xero, MYOB, Reckon, or similar accounting software
  • Strong systems and document management skills, especially with workpaper software, such as FYI or similar software, and keeping files well-substantiated and audit-ready.
  • Assist in maintaining cloud-based client files and ensuring data integrity

Key Skills & Experience

  • At least 3 years of Australian tax experience in Australian public accounting practice.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and effectively manage assigned responsibilities.
  • Degree in Accounting & sufficient practical work experience.
  • Good working experience of Australian tax law and compliance requirements.
  • Experience preparing tax returns, BAS, and financial statements
  • Xero / FYI Accounting & Document Management software experience preferred (other accounting platforms also welcomed).
  • Experience in Division 7A.
