Position

Why join the team!

This role is an excellent opportunity for a highly capable Ab Initio professional who thrives in a space where technical leadership, independence, and hands‑on expertise truly matter. You will be valued for your ability to remain calm and solution‑focused during high‑pressure production scenarios, applying strong analytical thinking and problem‑solving skills to guide the team toward stable, high‑quality outcomes.

We are looking for someone who leads by example — someone who is comfortable rolling up their sleeves, diving into complex challenges, and uplifting the technical capability around them. The environment is dynamic and collaborative, making adaptability and openness essential, especially when engaging with diverse engineering backgrounds and a variety of delivery environments.

Clear, transparent communication is highly valued here. You will work with individuals who appreciate thoughtful dialogue, asynchronous feedback cycles, and a culture of shared responsibility. If you’re looking for a role where your practical expertise, steady leadership, and commitment to excellence will be recognised and relied on, this is a place where you can make a meaningful impact.

Job Purpose

The BI Manager is a deeply technical leader responsible for building, configuring, and optimising Ab Initio‑based data integration environments. This role goes beyond ETL development — it requires hands‑on infrastructure interaction, environment configuration, troubleshooting, and enabling the BI ecosystem to run independently without external dependency. The BI Manager will drive the evolution from basic Ab Initio usage into fully‑fledged, mature ETL processes, shaping the team’s technical capability.

This is a senior, high‑responsibility role that supports urgent operational issues, ensures platform stability, and builds a sustainable Ab Initio practice within the team.

Job Responsibilities

Hands‑On Ab Initio Engineering & Infrastructure

  • Lead advanced development of Ab Initio ETL processes, including complex graphs and continuous flows.

  • Configure, maintain, and troubleshoot Ab Initio infrastructure components, environments, and servers.

  • Set up and manage configurations typically handled by administrators, reducing reliance on external support teams.

  • Drive the rollout of full Ab Initio‑based ETL processes (a capability the team has not yet fully implemented).

  • Ensure stability and rapid response for platform outages, server issues, or urgent production incidents.

  • Build frameworks, patterns, and reusable components for enterprise‑scale Ab Initio workloads.

Data Engineering & Technical Ownership

  • Oversee integration across data pipelines, warehousing processes, and cloud/on‑prem platforms.

  • Work hands‑on in SQL where required, but maintain Ab Initio as the primary engineering tool.

  • Ensure high‑quality, accurate, and consistent data delivery across BI outputs.

  • Lead performance optimisation across pipelines and data flows.

  • Build end‑to‑end data engineering solutions with minimal reliance on external teams.

Solution Architecture & Technical Direction

  • Shape the technical strategy for Ab Initio usage within the BI environment.

  • Translate business needs into scalable, high‑performance technical designs.

  • Provide leadership on ETL patterns, data flow modelling, error handling, and operational best practices.

  • Introduce new design approaches, modernisation opportunities, and process efficiencies.

Team Leadership & Capability Uplift

  • Guide and mentor BI engineers, upskilling them in Ab Initio fundamentals, configuration, and advanced techniques.

  • Build team maturity in understanding environments, metadata, workflow orchestration, and troubleshooting.

  • Support technical tests during recruitment and assist in evaluating candidate competence.

  • Promote a culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Job Responsibilities Continue

Operational Excellence & Independence

  • Reduce reliance on external Ab Initio teams by owning more aspects internally.

  • Handle critical issues such as server failures, configuration gaps, and emergency fixes.

  • Establish operational processes for deployments, version control, scheduling, and monitoring.

  • Document and maintain operational runbooks, configuration guidelines, and troubleshooting playbooks.

Stakeholder & Vendor Collaboration

  • Work closely with architects, business users, quality teams, DevOps, and platform owners.

  • Engage external Ab Initio product houses or contractors where necessary.

  • Support proactive communication and provide regular updates during recruitment and project cycles.

Essential Qualifications - NQF Level

  • Diploma
  • Advanced Diplomas/National 1st Degrees

Preferred Qualification

  • Advanced Diploma or Degree in IT, Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or related field.

Minimum Experience Level

  • 5+ years of strong hands‑on Ab Initio development — but competence and depth of experience matter more than exact years.

  • Must have real configuration experience, not just training.

  • Experience in Ab Initio infrastructure, environments, and troubleshooting.

  • Strong experience in ETL design, data pipelines, and data warehouse environments.

  • Good SQL skills (but Ab Initio expertise takes priority).

  • Exposure to supporting urgent operational issues, platform maintenance, and environment fixes.

  • Experience in guiding or mentoring technical team members.

Technical / Professional Knowledge

  • Ab Initio: GDE, Conduct>It, EME, BRE, Metadata Hub, Continuous Flows

  • Ab Initio configuration & environment setup

  • ETL design, optimisation, and scheduling

  • SQL (PostgreSQL, MS SQL, DB2)

  • Unix/Linux scripting

  • Job scheduling tools (e.g., Autosys, Control‑M)

  • CI/CD, version control (Git)

  • Data warehousing practices

  • Troubleshooting and root‑cause analysis
