About the Opportunity

Our client, a well-established precision engineering company based in the Strand / Helderberg area, is looking for an experienced Conventional Miller to join their workshop team.

The successful candidate must have strong hands-on experience with conventional milling machines and be able to manufacture precision components independently from engineering drawings.

This position would suit an experienced machinist who understands precision work, tooling, setup and tolerances, and who enjoys working in a practical engineering environment.

Minimum Requirements

• Proven experience as a Conventional Miller / Manual Miller / Milling Machinist.


• Strong experience operating conventional milling machines.


• Ability to set up machines and complete jobs independently.


• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.


• Strong understanding of:


• Milling operations


• Tool selection


• Feeds and speeds


• Tolerances and fits


• Job setup and workholding


• Experience working to close tolerances.


• Competent in the use of precision measuring equipment.


• Previous experience in precision engineering or manufacturing is preferred.


• CNC milling experience would be advantageous but is not essential.


• A relevant Trade Test / Red Seal would be advantageous.

 Key Responsibilities

• Set up and operate conventional milling machines independently.


• Manufacture components from engineering drawings and specifications.

Carry out milling operations including:

• Face milling


• Slot milling


• Drilling


• Boring


• Pocketing


• Keyways


• Profile machining


• Select the correct cutting tools for each job.


• Determine appropriate feeds and speeds.


• Set up workpieces, fixtures and tooling accurately.


• Manufacture components to specified tolerances.


• Measure and inspect components throughout the machining process.

Use precision measuring instruments including:

• Verniers


• Micrometers


• Depth gauges


• Dial indicators


• Bore gauges


• Identify and troubleshoot machining and setup problems.


• Perform modifications, repair work and re-machining where required.


• Maintain machines, tooling and workshop equipment.


• Keep the working area clean and organised.


• Ensure high standards of quality and workmanship.


• Follow all health and safety procedures.
