The Role


 


The core function of the GP Lecturer (NUCom) is to function as the pastoral and teaching lead for the new NUCom programme. The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic and vibrant group of GP educationalist at Newcastle University.

Key Accountabilities



Accountable to the Board of Medical Studies through the Head of GP Teaching and the Director of Medical Studies to manage the delivery of the MBBS curriculum within the new LEP, NUCom.  Working with the current NUCom leads, Dr Franc and Prof. Alberti, the candidate will take a lead on the pastoral needs of the students and developing and helping to deliver the weekly teaching sessions on campus. The successful candidate will be expected to:


 



  • To know about the processes and delivery of the MBBS Curriculum within the NUCom LEP, to ensure as far as possible the equity of student experience

  • To be the pastoral and teaching lead for the NUCom students

  • To develop and help deliver the weekly teaching on campus to the students

  • To supervise the teaching fellow(s) delivering the on-campus teaching

  • To be accountable to the NUCom leads, currently Dr. Franc and Prof. Alberti

  • To contribute to the clinical assessment and professional assessment processes for NUCom students to ensure standardisation and uniformity across the Regional Medical School

  • To contribute to relevant committees, such as regional GPL meetings, and LEP related meetings. Also to liaise with other LEPs and course directors to ensure horizontal and vertical integration

  • To make a reasonable contribution, in consultation with the Head of GP teaching, to teaching and assessment and other curriculum processes (e.g. student selection) ‘beyond’ NUCom

  • To demonstrate a commitment to developing relevant knowledge and skills in relation to teaching and curriculum management

  • Engage in subject, professional and pedagogic research and scholarship as required to enhance teaching and learning provision, securing appropriate funding when necessary.

  • Ability to prioritise and organise time effectively

  • Enthusiasm and creativity

  • Potential to link research, practice and teaching

  • Experience of teaching small groups

  • Experience of developing teaching materials.


 


Desirable:



  • Experience of speaking in public, including lectures or conferences

  • Some flexibility in their clinical work.

  • Ability to respond enthusiastically and positively to students

  • Demonstrable willingness to work collaboratively with colleagues as part of a team

  • Sensitivity to the views of others

Qualifications


 


Essential:



  • Holds an MBBS degree or equivalent

  • Fully qualified (MRCGP) and currently practising GP with teaching experience

  • Knowledge of the MBBS curriculum

  • Experience of teaching MBBS students

  • An interest in developing an academic career.



Desirable:



  • Possesses a further teaching qualification, such as the Masters in Medical Education, a Trainer’s qualification, or a further degree

  • Knowledge of the NUCom initiative.
