About Our Client

Our client operates an established luxury safari lodge situated within a renowned Big Five game reserve in South Africa’s North West Province.

The lodge provides guests with a personalised luxury safari experience supported by professionally conducted wildlife activities, high service standards and responsible conservation practices.

Due to the remote location of the property, this is a permanent live-in opportunity suited to an experienced senior field guide who is comfortable residing on-site and working according to a structured lodge roster.

The Opportunity

Our client is seeking an experienced, knowledgeable and guest-focused Head Ranger to lead the guiding department and oversee all safari and wildlife-related guest activities.

The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining exceptional guiding standards, managing and developing the ranger team, coordinating safari activities and ensuring that all guiding operations are conducted safely, professionally and in accordance with reserve and company requirements.

This is a hands-on leadership role requiring an experienced guide who is passionate about conservation, guest education, employee development and delivering memorable safari experiences.

Key Responsibilities

Safari and Guiding Operations

  • Lead and conduct professional game drives, guided walks and other approved wildlife activities.
  • Ensure that all safari activities are conducted safely and according to lodge and reserve procedures.
  • Maintain exceptional guiding, interpretation and guest-engagement standards.
  • Coordinate daily game-drive schedules and allocate guides and vehicles.
  • Monitor guest activity bookings, special requests and safari preferences.
  • Ensure that guides are fully briefed regarding guest requirements and operational priorities.
  • Adapt safari experiences according to guest interests, weather conditions and wildlife activity.
  • Maintain a visible and professional presence within the lodge.
  • Assist with VIP, repeat-guest and special-interest safari experiences.
  • Ensure that all wildlife sightings are approached responsibly and respectfully.

Guiding Team Leadership

  • Lead, supervise and support the lodge’s field-guide and ranger team.
  • Allocate daily duties and safari responsibilities.
  • Conduct departmental briefings, meetings and operational handovers.
  • Prepare or assist with guide rosters, leave planning and shift allocation.
  • Monitor the punctuality, conduct, appearance and performance of guides.
  • Provide ongoing mentoring, coaching and practical field training.
  • Evaluate guiding standards and identify development requirements.
  • Support junior guides in developing their knowledge, confidence and guest-interaction skills.
  • Promote teamwork, accountability and professional conduct.
  • Address minor performance concerns and escalate serious matters to lodge management.

Guest Experience

  • Welcome guests and provide professional safari briefings.
  • Build positive relationships with guests while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Deliver accurate, engaging and age-appropriate wildlife interpretation.
  • Tailor safari experiences according to guest expectations and interests.
  • Respond professionally to guest concerns, complaints and activity-related requests.
  • Ensure that guests understand relevant safety procedures before activities.
  • Communicate special occasions, mobility concerns and guest preferences to the guiding team.
  • Obtain guest feedback and use it to improve safari experiences.
  • Work closely with lodge management and guest-relations teams to maintain a seamless guest journey.

Safety and Risk Management

  • Take responsibility for the safe operation of guiding activities.
  • Ensure that guides comply with reserve regulations and lodge safety procedures.
  • Conduct pre-departure vehicle, equipment and safety checks.
  • Ensure that first-aid kits, communication equipment and emergency supplies are available and maintained.
  • Lead or support emergency responses involving guests, employees, vehicles or wildlife.
  • Report incidents, near misses and safety concerns promptly.
  • Maintain accurate incident and activity records.
  • Ensure that guides operate only within the scope of their qualifications and authorisations.
  • Participate in emergency drills and safety training.
  • Promote a strong safety culture within the guiding department.

Vehicle and Equipment Management

  • Monitor the condition, cleanliness and readiness of safari vehicles.
  • Coordinate routine servicing, maintenance and repairs with the maintenance team.
  • Ensure that vehicle defects are reported and addressed promptly.
  • Maintain vehicle inspection and service records.
  • Monitor fuel usage, mileage and vehicle allocations.
  • Ensure that radios, binoculars, spotlights and other guiding equipment remain operational.
  • Control the issuing and return of departmental equipment.
  • Report damaged, missing or unsafe equipment.
  • Assist with departmental stock counts and replacement planning.

Conservation and Environmental Responsibility

  • Promote ethical wildlife-viewing practices.
  • Support the reserve’s conservation objectives and environmental policies.
  • Educate guests about local wildlife, ecology, conservation and community initiatives.
  • Report injured animals, unusual wildlife behaviour, environmental damage or suspected illegal activity.
  • Maintain respectful distances from wildlife and minimise unnecessary disturbance.
  • Encourage environmentally responsible behaviour among guides and guests.
  • Support wildlife-monitoring, conservation or research initiatives where required.
  • Maintain current knowledge of reserve conditions, wildlife movements and environmental developments.

Reserve and Stakeholder Liaison

  • Maintain professional relationships with reserve management, conservation teams and neighbouring lodge guides.
  • Attend reserve meetings and guiding forums where required.
  • Communicate relevant reserve updates to the guiding department.
  • Ensure compliance with traversing, sighting and radio-communication protocols.
  • Coordinate shared sightings professionally and respectfully.
  • Report breaches of reserve procedures to the appropriate manager.
  • Represent the lodge professionally within the wider reserve community.

Training and Development

  • Conduct regular guiding assessments and practical training.
  • Facilitate wildlife, birding, tracking, astronomy and interpretive-development sessions.
  • Monitor the validity of guide qualifications, permits and supporting documents.
  • Maintain departmental training and competency records.
  • Assist guides with structured development plans.
  • Support internal promotions and succession planning.
  • Encourage guides to maintain current industry knowledge and professional standards.
  • Identify external training or certification requirements.

Administration and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate guide rosters, activity schedules and departmental records.
  • Prepare daily, weekly and monthly guiding reports where required.
  • Record vehicle usage, fuel consumption and maintenance concerns.
  • Maintain copies of guide qualifications, licenses and permits.
  • Prepare incident, guest-feedback and wildlife-activity reports.
  • Assist with departmental budgeting and expenditure monitoring.
  • Monitor guide uniforms, equipment and operational supplies.
  • Attend operational and management meetings.
  • Provide clear departmental handovers before roster breaks or leave periods.


Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • Matric or Grade 12.
  • A recognised field-guiding qualification.
  • FGASA qualification at an appropriate senior level for the position.
  • Registered and legally permitted to guide within the relevant province and reserve environment.
  • A valid professional driving permit.
  • A valid South African driver’s license.
  • Current first-aid certification.
  • Relevant trails-guiding qualifications and authorisations would be highly advantageous.
  • Appropriate firearm competency and guiding-related authorisations where required for the activities conducted.
  • At least five years’ professional field-guiding experience.
  • Previous experience guiding within a Big Five reserve is essential.
  • Previous experience as a Head Ranger, Head Guide, Senior Field Guide or Assistant Head Guide is strongly preferred.
  • Previous experience supervising and developing a guiding team.
  • Strong knowledge of Southern African wildlife, ecology, conservation, birding and animal behaviour.
  • Experience conducting professional game drives and guest briefings.
  • Excellent spoken English and confident guest-engagement ability.
  • Additional South African or international languages would be advantageous.
  • Good administrative, reporting and computer skills.
  • Willingness to live and work in a remote lodge environment.
  • Willingness to work early mornings, evenings, weekends and public holidays according to the lodge roster.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will be a confident and experienced senior guide who combines excellent wildlife knowledge with strong leadership and guest-service ability.

They must be comfortable leading from the front, conducting safari activities and supporting the guide team operationally. The successful candidate should be passionate about developing junior guides and maintaining consistently high standards across the department.

They must understand that the role extends beyond wildlife knowledge and includes staff leadership, administration, safety management, vehicle oversight and close collaboration with the wider lodge-management team.
