Psychologist - Gauteng Immigrants Project

Location: Johannesburg, Gauteng

Project: MSF Immigrants Project (Emergency response to anti-migrant violence & healthcare access barriers for migrants)

Main Purpose:

Providing psychological support to immigrants, refugees and communities affected by xenophobia in Johannesburg according to MSF principles, standards and procedures to improve their psychosocial condition.

Key Responsibilities:

• Carrying out evaluation of mental health needs of patients and establishing a diagnosis and a plan of treatment.


• Informing the patient about the possible consequences of the illness and the drug treatment to follow and referring patients to other health professionals whenever necessary, in order to provide the most appropriate treatment and improve the patient's condition


• Implementing the Sexual Gender Based Violence (SGBV) protocol, identifying possible victims of SGBV and referring them to the medical facility so that they receive the necessary treatment.


• Providing psychological support and psychotherapy sessions (individual, group) to immigrants according to MSF protocols in order to improve their mental health conditions.

• Assisting and training staff members and resourceful people whenever necessary to enhance the scope of MH activities.

• Collecting statistical and monitoring data about mental health activities


• Informing the supervisor and the medical team about any issues or problems that may arise related to patients’ treatment in order to provide the best possible solution from a medical perspective


• Ensuring that all patients information is kept confidential.

Education

• Essential degree or diploma in Psychology.
  

Terms and Condition

• Salary: R 29 000


• Contract duration: 2 Months 

Requirements:

• 2 years’ experience essential. Experience with NGO desirable.


• Strong communication, facilitation and interpersonal


• Ability to work in tense, politicized and rapidly changing


• Fluency in English; proficiency in at least one local language (isiZulu, Sesotho, ) and/or migrant languages (French, Portuguese, Shona, Swahili) highly desirable.


• Computer literacy (MS Office).


• Commitment to MSF’s humanitarian principles and experience working with diverse cultural groups.
