Accountabilities
As a Senior Java Developer, you will take ownership of backend development and data service delivery, ensuring that systems remain scalable, reliable, and efficient. Your main responsibilities will include:
- Design, develop, and maintain backend services built on top of a large-scale data platform.
- Build and optimize data processing workflows for both batch and streaming use cases.
- Leverage AWS services, including S3, Redshift, Athena, Kinesis, Glue, Step Functions, Lambda, and SQS, to support cloud-native data solutions.
- Collaborate with product teams and key stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver high-quality technical solutions.
- Develop and maintain APIs, data models, and data integration processes to ensure reliable data access and processing.
- Document technical architectures, APIs, data workflows, and operational procedures to support maintainability and knowledge sharing.
- Contribute to the performance, scalability, reliability, and continuous improvement of backend and data-intensive systems.
Requirements
The ideal candidate is a hands-on backend engineer with strong Java development skills, solid database expertise, and practical experience building data-intensive applications in AWS environments. You should be comfortable working independently in a remote setting, communicating clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders, and delivering solutions within a fast-paced engagement.
- Technical expertise: Strong proficiency in Java and SQL, with familiarity with Python considered an advantage.
- Data engineering: Demonstrated experience working with large datasets and designing or supporting data-intensive systems involving batch processing and streaming.
- AWS experience: Hands-on knowledge of AWS services such as S3, Redshift, Athena, Kinesis, Glue, Step Functions, Lambda, and SQS.
- Database skills: Strong database knowledge, with experience in PostgreSQL and Amazon Redshift considered beneficial.
- Backend development: Experience designing, developing, and maintaining reliable backend services and data-driven applications.
- Communication and documentation: Strong written communication skills and the ability to document APIs, data models, workflows, and technical processes clearly.
- Education: A degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- Location and availability: Must be based in South Africa, available to work remotely with a schedule that partially overlaps with US working hours, and able to start immediately or with a maximum notice period of one week.
- Contract readiness: Must be willing to work as an independent contractor for an initial three-to-six-month engagement, with the ability to invoice monthly.
