A Team Leader in South African plastic recycling oversees daily production, ensuring, and coordinating teams to meet efficiency, quality, and safety targets.
Purpose:
To bridge the gap between management and frontline workers, focusing on safety, production targets, and quality control
Reporting to:
Plant Engineer
Authority over:
Line Assistant
Requirements:
Qualifications:
Matric (Grade 12) is essential; a Production/Operations diploma is advantageous and or A certificate in mechanical or electrical studies is beneficial.
Experience:
3–7+ years in production or plastic manufacturing (specifically LDPE, BOPP, or similar).
Technical Knowledge:
Understanding plastic granulation, washing lines, or extrusion processes.
Skills and competences
Team Performance Management: Leading, coaching, and motivating a diverse team, including onboarding new members and conducting performance assessments.
Effective Communication: High proficiency in delegating tasks clearly, negotiating with management for resources, and acting as a professional confidant for team members.
Problem Solving: Rapidly identifying root causes for production issues and implementing corrective actions to prevent downtime.
Key Performance areas:
Production Oversight:
Monitor and optimize production output, quality standards, and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
To take full responsibility for shift production output, efficiency, and quality.
to ensure production targets are achieved consistently.
to monitor and control process parameters
to act immediately to resolve production delays and inefficiencies.
Team Leadership:
Supervise & co-ordinate Line assistants, coach, and develop & enforce discipline in team members, including scheduling shifts and managing performance.
Technical Operations:
Manage machinery checks, troubleshoot, and ensure accurate production record-keeping.
Equipment & Maintenance Coordination
Ensure daily pre-start inspections are completed.
Monitor equipment condition and performance.
Coordinate with maintenance for repairs and servicing.
Follow up to ensure issues are fully resolved.
Quality Control & Material Loss Tracking:
Ensure all materials meet quality specifications and address non-conforming products.
Inspect incoming materials for quality and contamination.
Ensure proper handling and storage of raw and processed materials.
Coordinate loading and dispatch activities.
Safety Compliance:
Ensure strict adherence to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards within the factory setting.
Enforce PPE usage and safe working procedures.
Conduct daily toolbox talks
Identify and eliminate unsafe conditions.
Ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
Weekly & Monthly Reporting:
Prepare detailed weekly and monthly reports including:
i. Production vs Targets
ii. Downtime analysis
iii. Yield performance
iv. Material losses
