An exciting opportunity is available for a full time Veterinary Nurse in a predominantly small animal working environment.  The successful candidate will join the dynamic Animal Care Department at our Bloemfontein site.

Primary Job Purpose

To provide specialised veterinary nursing care and the promotion of the wellbeing of all animals.

Job Specific Duties and Responsibilities

• Interact with and handle animals to ensure content, well-adjusted and cared for animals


• Clinical assistance to Veterinarians and perform nursing tasks according to SAVC rules


• Conduct relevant observations, examinations, analysis, and procedures according to internal and professional standards and study protocols


• Perform routine tasks required for implementation of the breeding management plan under the supervision of a veterinarian


• Management, handling, and storage of scheduled/unscheduled drugs according to professional standards


• Manage the clinic and theatre and relevant equipment according to professional standards


• Participate in day-to-day research activities such as dose preparation, administration, observations, sample collection, and other related research tasks to ensure safe and successful study practices


• Accurate data capture and quality control of raw data

Minimum education and experience requirements

• Diploma Veterinary Nursing, and


• SAVC registered, and


• Experience in basic veterinary laboratory diagnostics, and


• Experience with pharmacy and drug book management as well as supply chain management in terms of animal health supplies


• Experience in working with all the following animals: production animals, companion animals, rabbits and rodents will be beneficial


• Valid driver’s license required

• Competency in Microsoft Office suite and willingness to learn new systems

Work Environment

• Work in a laboratory/research type environment with strict access and biosafety controls


• Interact with and handle animals


• Be available for work during normal work hours as well as after-hours according to pre-arranged departmental schedules that my require evening, weekend, and public holiday work
