The Position

The position 

The Physical Compute team delivers intelligent, fit-for-purpose bare-metal infrastructure integrated seamlessly into the Roche ecosystem. The product centralizes and simplifies the delivery of Physical compute infrastructure across our global data centers, computer rooms, and small sites. We provide end-to-end lifecycle management—from provisioning and hardware preparation to maintenance and automated decommissioning—ensuring reliability, scalability, and compliance for workloads that demand the highest standards. We manage thousands of servers across global data centers for both, enterprise and scientific workloads.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual for the position of Physical Compute Engineer. In this role, you will technically lead challenging activities, make critical technical decisions, and architect resilient solutions across multiple domains. 

Key responsibilities:

• Oversee the entire compute hardware lifecycle—including sizing consultancy, quotation creation, purchasing, backlog tracking, and physical installation up to system connectivity ensuring processes are efficient and optimized.

• Drive physical compute engineering standards and automation to minimize manual intervention across all physical compute assets. Lead the end-to-end design, build, and implementation of integrated, resilient physical compute solutions across various compute flavors.

• Cross-Functional Coordination with Value streams, Network, OS, and Automation teams, as well as Datacenter staff and vendors on delivery and strategic planning

• Stakeholder management: act as a key technical advisor, translating complex customer needs into standard solutions. Communicates and presents complex information, issues and potential solutions on a regular basis on projects, to cross-functional teams and the business in non-technical terms. Provides guidance to senior internal/external stakeholders on relevant technical matters. 

• Demonstrated skills, experience and depth of knowledge to be able to influence IT Infrastructure vendor product evaluations and recommendations for improvements. Lead vendor governance with key hardware partners (such as HPE and Lenovo), managing operational reviews, SLAs, KPIs, and the lifecycle of physical compute maintenance contracts (renewals, support tiers, and compliance). 

• Evaluate emerging technologies in the physical compute scope via PoCs, while ensuring all infrastructure aligns with Roche's Technical Architecture Framework (TAF) and Quality/Regulatory standards.

• Estimate engineering resources, risks, and timelines for complex initiatives, while providing high-level escalation support to resolve major operational incidents.

Qualifications:

Education:

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, systems analysis or a related study, or equivalent experience.

Experience: 

• 5-7 years of relevant experience in hardware Engineering&Operations, data center infrastructure, or systems administration.

• Hands-on experience in the following areas/technologies:

  • Physical infrastructure Management&Integration experience working with the physical offering from major Enterprise Data Center Compute vendors such as HPE, Lenovo, NVIDIA..

  • Experience with Enterprise HW management tools, specifically HPE OneView and Lenovo XClarity.

  • Knowledge and experience with Compute offering for hyperconverge, High performance computing (HPC),  AICompute HW (NVIDIA solutions). E.g.: HPE Synergy Frame management, HPE ProLiant Compute, GB 300, RTX6000,  Lenovo ThinkAgile SR630, SR650, HX630.. 

  • Ops management: experience managing full HW lifecycle processes, including planning, installation, support & maintenance, decommissioning, and a proven track record in vendor performance management and maintenance contract supervision with infrastructure providers. 

  • Experience in provisioning solutions using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) principles, ensuring that all infrastructure components and their combinations are defined, managed, and provisioned exclusively through code.

  • Hands-on experience in deployment automation using Shell/Python Scripting with concentration on DevOps and CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GitLab/GitHub. Source Code Management experience

• Proven experience applying best practices and IT operations in an always-up, always-available service environment utilizing Scrum and Agile methodologies

• Experience operating in regulated environments

• Strong collaboration and influencing skills with a proven ability to lead and inspire

• Analytical, logical problem-resolution skills

• Experience in working in a multicultural and international environment

• Advanced English reading, writing, listening and speaking skills
