Background and Purpose
3D printing is becoming an increasingly important part of our business. As the use of additive manufacturing grows, so does the need to understand how different materials behave when exposed to forces from different directions. Understanding how components should be printed to achieve the desired properties under pushing, twisting, and pulling forces is essential for producing strong and reliable parts.
We experience both advantages and challenges with this manufacturing method. Printing direction and print settings are crucial factors in achieving a successful part with high strength and good dimensional fit. In addition, the choice of material and infill structure can have a significant impact on the structural strength of the final component.
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the breaking point of several materials under different printing setups. The conclusions from the study should provide a better understanding of how changes in material and printing parameters affect the structural strength of 3D-printed parts.
The thesis will include:
3D printing of given and refined designs using different materials and printing setups.
Physical tensile testing of each version.
Comparison of structural strength between different materials and printing setups.
Investigation of the relationship between infill structure and tensile strength.
Analysis and evaluation of the test results.
For a successful thesis project, we believe the applicants should have:
An ongoing degree in mechanical engineering, or equivalent
Experience with CAD and a basic understanding of material selection.
An interest in 3D manufacturing and physical testing.
Experience with Excel and data point analysis.
The ability to independently carry out literature studies, data analysis, and laboratory testing.
Good knowledge in both Swedish and English, speaking and writing.
