Job Description - Adjunct - Technical Tutor/Demonstrator in Fashion


Job Purpose



To conduct and contribute to learning, teaching, and knowledge transfer to benefit students, the School, the University and the wider community.





Principal Duties:



Garment Construction



  • Demonstrate, oversee and co-ordinate all aspects of garment assembly from cutting to making and pressing across a range of different product areas.

  • Liaise and assist academic staff with classes in the fashion workshops.







Pattern Cutting and Draping



  • Demonstrate, oversee and co-ordinate manufacturing techniques and fundamental principles of pattern cutting and draping.



Student Guidance



  • Advise students on the industrial manufacturing methods and machinery.



Machine Maintenance



  • Carry out basic and routine equipment and machine maintenance

  • Ability to identify machine faults and rectify as quickly as possible to allow students to continue with work.







Lab Management



  • Manage barcoded lab consumables to ensure efficient tracking and inventory.

  • Organise the day to day running of the workrooms and studios by producing all relevant   materials, making sure all relevant machines for classes are available and threaded up if

  • necessary and ensuring stocks of workshop consumables are available and consumables are well stocked by liasing with procurement department.

  • Contribute to the commercial activities of the School of Textiles and Design.

  • Maintain an orderly and well-functioning lab space.







Technology and Equipment:







Demonstrate the computerised embroidery machines which also involves knowledge of the computer software.







Summer Schools and Short Courses:







Prepare materials for and deliver summer schools and short courses in the area of fashion construction where applicable







Recruitment and Events:



  • Involved in recruitment events such as the open days speaking to large groups of potential students and parents.

  • Liaise with faculty to prepare for and execute events seamlessly.



Health and Safety:



  • Be responsible for and adhere to University and School policies on Health and Safety issues as they relate to the sewing workshops: maintains accurate records of risk assessments of all practices and procedures used in the workroom: advise students and staff of the outcome of risk assessment: monitors and sustains good workshop practice.



Professional Development:



  • Willingness to undertake recognised training programmes and participate in the sharing of knowledge with all staff

Requirements

Person Specification







Essential Criteria:



These are attributes without which a candidate would not be able to undertake the full remit of the role. Applicants who do not clearly demonstrate in their application that they possess the essential requirements will normally be eliminated at the short listing stage.



  • Educated to Degree Level in Fashion I Clothing Technology

  • Candidate must have excellent pattern cutting and garment construction skills, and be able to work on the industrial sewing machines and work with a wide variety of fabrics.

  • Mechanical knowledge of industrial machines to allow you to keep machines running during class time. Maintain and repair as required.

  • Must have experience of demonstration and some teaching

  • Must have good communication skills.

  • Must be able to work independently and be self- motivated.

  • Attention to detail and patience is essential.

  • Must be computer literate, with an interest in developing/advancing these skills. Proficiency preferred

  • Must be willing to attend training if required.



Desirable Criteria:



These are attributes which would be useful for the candidate to hold. When short listing, these criteria will be considered when more than one applicant meets the essential criteria.



  • Experience of working in the garment construction industry, preferably producing patterns and samples for a wide variety of garment types, and experience of working with selection of fabrics and industrial machinery.

  • Knowledge of / familiarity with Industrial production methods and systems.

  • Knowledge of Clo3D 

  • Knowledge of Adobe software
