This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Field Service Engineer to join a small, established team supporting customers across the UK. Ideally, you will already have experience working with gas detection equipment. However, our client will also consider engineers from fire alarm, security alarm or similar electrical and electronic systems backgrounds, provided you have strong testing, controls and fault-finding experience. THE OPPORTUNITY This is a home-based field role offering considerable autonomy over your diary, workload and customer visits. You will join a team of three other Field Service Engineers and report directly to the Fixed Systems Service Manager. From your home base, you will travel to customer locations throughout the UK to service, test, repair and commission fixed gas detection equipment and associated control systems. The customer base is extremely varied and includes highly regulated and safety-critical environments such as nuclear power stations, prisons, utilities and industrial facilities. Some locations may be remote, and you will be required to complete the relevant customer inductions and comply with site-specific safety and access procedures. Approximately 85% of the time, you should be home in the evening. However, occasional overnight stays will be required depending on the location and nature of the work. WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING Carrying out routine servicing, testing, repair and commissioning of fixed gas detection equipment and control systems. Diagnosing electrical, electronic and system faults at customer sites. Reading and interpreting circuit diagrams and electrical drawings. Attending planned service visits and responding to occasional reactive or emergency call-outs. Installing and commissioning equipment where required. Advising customers on the safe operation and ongoing maintenance of their systems. Delivering a professional, knowledgeable and reassuring service in customer-facing environments. Managing your own diary, workload and service-call schedule. Planning visits efficiently to maximise productive time while allowing capacity for urgent calls. Maintaining appropriate stocks of spare parts, consumables and accessories within your company van. Ensuring test equipment remains calibrated and maintained at the required intervals. Completing accurate service documentation, call plans and weekly or monthly reports. Working safely in accordance with risk assessments, method statements and Permit to Work procedures. Liaising with internal sales, engineering and customer-support teams when additional technical input is required. WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR Essential: Practical experience in electrical or electronic testing, controls and fault-finding. Previous experience servicing, maintaining or repairing technical equipment in the field. The ability to read circuit diagrams and electrical drawings. Strong customer-service and communication skills. The confidence to work independently and take responsibility for resolving problems on-site. Excellent organisation and diary-management skills. A good level of computer literacy and the ability to complete accurate service reports. An understanding of risk assessments, method statements and Permit to Work schemes. Flexibility to travel throughout the UK and stay away from home occasionally. A full UK driving licence. Currently based in the UK with the right to work in the UK. Ideally located in Birmingham or within approximately a 30-mile radius. Desirable: Previous experience with fixed gas detection equipment or systems. Experience servicing fire alarms, security alarms, life-safety systems, instrumentation or similar electronic control equipment. Experience working within regulated, high-security or safety-critical customer environments. Installation and commissioning experience. WORKING PATTERN AND ON-CALL ARRANGEMENTS Standard working hours are 8:30am–4:30pm, Monday to Friday. The role is home-based, with travel directly from home to customer sites throughout the UK. You will have autonomy over the planning of your diary and workload. Engineers currently spend approximately 85% of evenings at home. Occasional overnight stays will be required. The on-call rota is approximately one weekend per month and is operated from home. On-call service requests are reported to be relatively infrequent. Additional occasional on-call support may be required depending on business and customer needs. Overtime and on-call hours are paid at 1.5x the standard hourly rate. TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT You do not need to arrive knowing every product. The successful candidate will receive comprehensive product and technical training, beginning with an initial week at the company’s training facility in France. This will allow you to understand the equipment, technology and applications before progressing into supported field-based learning in the UK. Ongoing training and development will be provided to help you build specialist knowledge and grow within the organisation. SALARY AND BENEFITS Salary of £38,000–£45,000 depending on experience. Overtime and on-call work paid at 1.5x hourly rate. Company van. Company laptop and mobile phone. Home-based working with autonomy over your diary. 25 days’ annual leave plus nine public holidays. Option to purchase up to five additional days of annual leave. Pension plan matching employee contributions up to 7%. Life assurance worth four times your basic annual salary. Health and wellbeing support through a health cash plan. Employee Assistance Programme. Employee discounts and benefits platform. Cycle to Work scheme. Enhanced family-friendly benefits. Company sick pay. Comprehensive technical and product training. Initial week of product training in France. Continued professional development and career support. WHY CONSIDER THIS OPPORTUNITY? This role offers the independence of managing your own territory and workload, while still being part of a knowledgeable and supportive engineering team. You will work with advanced safety technology that protects people, assets and operations within some of the UK’s most critical environments. It is an opportunity to develop specialist expertise, work with a varied customer base and join a global business committed to technical quality, reliability and long-term development. Gas detection experience would be highly valuable, but it is not the only route into this position. If you have a strong background in fire alarms, security systems, instrumentation or another testing and controls environment, our client would be interested in hearing from you. To apply, please submit your CV through Talent Media. All applications and conversations will be treated in the strictest confidence.
