The Childcare Lead is an independent contractor engaged by BBJ/HBCU to oversee childcare operations during Healthy Beginnings Connect Us programming. The contractor provides direct care for children ages 0–13 and coordinates with childcare support staff and interns to ensure high-quality, developmentally appropriate, and safe childcare services during BBJ/HBCU classes, events, community programming, and one-on-one sessions.
Scope of Services & Deliverables
The following describes the deliverable outcomes the contractor is engaged to produce. The contractor determines how, when, and where work is performed to meet these outcomes, subject to any deadlines in the Contractor Services Agreement.
Program & Care Delivery
Provide direct care for children ages 0–13 including feeding, diaper changing, toileting, and nap/rest time support as needed during scheduled programming. Deliverable: session documentation submitted after each programming date.
Ensure inclusive care for children with special needs, implementing adaptive activities and supports in collaboration with parents/guardians.
Plan and coordinate age-appropriate activities supporting social, emotional, and educational growth across all age groups served. Deliverable: activity plan submitted prior to each programming session.
Maintain compliance with state childcare regulations and BBJ/HBCU program standards throughout the engagement.
Safety, Compliance & Communication
Monitor childcare spaces for safety, cleanliness, and readiness before and during programming.
Serve as the designated point of contact for reporting incidents, accidents, or concerns during programming. Deliverable: incident documentation submitted to the program contact within 24 hours of any incident.
Ensure all childcare support staff, interns, and volunteers adhere to mandated reporting laws, confidentiality requirements, and organizational policies.
Verify that all childcare providers have completed required background checks, CAN checks, and certifications prior to working with children.
Communicate program schedules and childcare needs with support staff and serve as liaison between parents/guardians and childcare staff. Deliverable: attendance and program summary submitted after each session.
Report attendance, incidents, and program summaries to the BBJ/HBCU program contact. Deliverable: written report submitted after each programming date.
Contractor Capabilities
The following describes the credentials and capacity a contractor must demonstrate to successfully fulfill this scope of services. These are not hiring criteria — they are the baseline capabilities required to meet the deliverables above.
High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a related field preferred
Child Development Associate (CDA) credential preferred
Minimum 2 years of experience in a childcare or supervisory childcare role
Pediatric CPR and First Aid certification — required
Must successfully complete criminal history, Sex Offender Registry, and Child Abuse and Neglect (CAN) Registry background checks
Strong communication and organizational skills
Reliable transportation to varied program sites throughout Louisville Metro
Physical capability to lift up to 30 lbs, stand, bend, and engage with children at floor/play level
Contractor Independence
Classification Protections
The contractor sets their own schedule and determines their own work methods. BBJ/HBCU does not assign specific hours, daily start/end times, or supervise day-to-day activities. The contractor is not eligible for employee benefits, tax withholding, workers’ compensation, or unemployment insurance. Form 1099-NEC will be issued for compensation of $600 or more in a calendar year. The contractor is solely responsible for all self-employment taxes.
The contractor may provide services to other organizations simultaneously, provided there is no conflict with BBJ/HBCU deliverables or confidentiality obligations.
