Job Description - Long-Term Second Grade Substitute


August 2026-January 2027

The San Francisco Friends School (SFFS), located in the heart of the Mission District in San Francisco, educates K-8 students in the tradition of Quaker learning. Job Summary:

Ideal candidates will demonstrate knowledge of and experience in hands-on and integrated learning, as well as child development and literacy skills; be highly motivated,, collaborative, enthusiastic about working with second graders, flexible; demonstrate a desire to learn; and show initiative. 

Essential functions of the role

  • Build a joyful and nurturing classroom community that sparks intellectual curiosity and growth for all students, and demonstrates clear and affirming classroom management
  • Collaborate with grade level team to plan and teach an integrated, mission-aligned, early elementary program, including literacy, writing, math, science, social studies, and social emotional learning
  • Collaborate with Student Learning Services and Counseling & Wellness teams as well as outside support providers, as necessary, to promote student success and wellness
  • Administer and analyze assessments to differentiate for a range of learners
  • Mentor an associate teacher by providing opportunities for learning by doing and constructive, growth-oriented feedback
  • Maintain consistent communication with parents/guardians through formal reporting (progress reports and conferences) as well as more informal check-ins
  • Co-write a bi-weekly newsletter about grade-level curriculum and activities; share students’ work with the Director of Communications to post on social media
  • Support school-wide events, including evening and weekend events,  such as  Back to School Night, math mornings, and admissions events, 
  • Supervise children in the classroom, during recesses and dismissal, and on field trips

Qualifications

Must Demonstrate:

  • At least two years of experience teaching at the elementary level
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field
  • Experience with differentiating instruction and creating a classroom environment that supports a range of learners
  • Passion for working and developing positive relationships with a diverse group of early elementary students
  • Openness to and interest in Quaker philosophy
  • Collaborative and creative team player
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current research around teaching and learning, and a desire for continued professional growth
  • Experience with communicating and fostering positive and proactive partnerships with a diverse group of families
  • Commitment to culturally responsive teaching practices and inclusivity

Preferred Qualities:

  • Multiple Subject Teaching Credential and/or an advanced degree in Education
  • Training in Responsive Classroom, Fundations, Bridges in Mathematics, Reader’s Workshop, and Writer’s Workshop
  • Language skills in Spanish

Physical requirements:

Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand-held learning devices and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.

Compensation and Benefit Summary: 

Competitive, exempt salary based on experience and qualifications.

$2,916.67 to $6,407.50 semi-monthly pay period ($70,000 to $153,780 if annualized). Placement on the step scale based on relevant teaching experience.
