Job Description - [26-27] Special Education Teacher K-5
Summary

We are seeking an experienced and innovative Special Education Teacher K-5 who is excited to work in a unique charter school environment and who has at their core a powerful alignment to our school mission and a deep appreciation for the unique needs of diverse learners. Responsibilities
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Instruction & Curriculum
Adapt and differentiate classroom instruction and materials to meet the individualized needs of students in accordance with IEP goals.
Develop and implement lessons, curriculum maps, and units aligned with Missouri Learning Standards.
Use data to inform instruction and address students’ academic, social, and behavioral needs.
Provide direct instruction and instructional supports to improve student achievement in academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills.
Model and demonstrate instructional strategies to support student understanding and engagement.
Assessment & Progress Monitoring
Administer formal and informal assessments to evaluate student performance and guide instructional decisions.
Monitor and track progress toward IEP goals and objectives.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation, including progress reports, logs, and student records.
Prepare required documentation such as IEPs, evaluation reports, and progress updates in compliance with legal timelines.
Collaboration & Communication
Collaborate with general education teachers, related service providers, and support staff to implement IEPs and improve student outcomes.
Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress, expectations, and strategies for support at home.
Participate in IEP meetings, problem-solving teams, and other school-based meetings.
Respond to inquiries from staff, families, and community members in a timely and professional manner.
Classroom & Behavior Management
Implement behavior management strategies to create a safe, structured, and positive learning environment.
Monitor students across school settings (e.g., classroom, cafeteria, field trips).
Support students in developing appropriate social, emotional, and problem-solving skills.
Supervision & Leadership
Direct and support paraprofessionals, instructional assistants, and volunteers.
Provide guidance on instructional strategies and accommodations for students with disabilities.
Professional Responsibilities
Participate in ongoing professional development and apply best practices in special education.
Actively contribute to the school community and uphold the school’s mission and values.
Maintain professionalism, including meeting deadlines, maintaining confidentiality, and fulfilling responsibilities.
Qualifications & Traits
The ideal Special Education Teacher K-5 will have:
A bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) and appropriate Missouri Special Education Certification (“K-12 Mild/Moderate Cross Categorical Special Education” preferred)
Experience (minimum two years preferred) teaching special education in a K-8 setting
Exceptional written and oral communication skills
Experience working in a socio-economic, racial and culturally diverse classroom settingAn ability to effectively manage and instruct both small and large groups of students
An exhibited ability to work with children in a caring and respectful manner in order to create a joyful, caring classroom environment where instructional time includes community building, conflict resolution, skill-building, and empowering students to be peacemakers and agents for positive social change
Knowledge of and experience with Special Education related computer programs to document services, notes, write IEP's, and run all necessary reports. Knowledge of all compliance-oriented Special Education timelines, procedures, and processes (generally and within MO DESE)
Maturity, humility, strong work ethic, sense of humor, and a can-do attitude
Willingness to explore additional school responsibilities (before/after school care and classes, committee involvement, etc.); stipends may be available for such responsibilities.
Fluency in Spanish is preferred.
Compensation & Benefits
This position will be placed on the “B/M/D" Faculty Salary Schedule.
