Job Description - Activities Coordinator

Job Description:

This position plans, organizes, develops, and directs the overall operations of the Residential Living Unit’s Activity Department in accordance with current Federal and State guidelines and regulations.

Essential Functions

  • Develop individualized plans of care for residents by assessing the resident using the MDS/RAI and incorporating residents’ interests, preferences, needs, and strengths.
  • Develops the facility activity program in compliance with state and federal regulations to promote the residents’ medical, spiritual, social and recreational needs.
  • Develops program to include evening and weekend activities.
  • Develops activities appropriate for residents with physical, mobility, sensory and cognitive deficits.
  • Coordinates with and supervises community agencies, volunteers and staff to provide planned activities for the residents.
  • Coordinates provision of needed supplies and material keeping withing the resident and departmental budgets.
  • Coordinates and may provide transportation for activities and appointments.
  • Develops, in collaboration with the resident council president, a plan for resident council meetings and reporting of results and follow-ups.
  • Develops and maintains quality assurance program for activity department.
  • Monitors performances, provides counseling and completes appraisals of activities staff.
  • Schedules Activities to coordinate staff need with program offerings and resident needs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Current, valid MT Driver’s license and proof of insurability
  • Qualified therapeutic recreation specialist or activities professional who is licensed or registered, if applicable, by the state of MT and:
    • Eligible for certification as a therapeutic recreation specialist or activities professional by a recognized accrediting body on or after Oct 1, 1990;
    • OR has 2 years experience in a social or recreational program within the last 5 years, 1 of which was full time patient activities program in a health care setting;
    • OR is a qualified occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant;
    • OR has, or can complete within 1 year of hire, the Activity Director course approved by the State of MT.
  • Current BLS certification by the American Heart Association or the ability to obtain within three (3) months of hire
  • Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification in the state of Montana or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Ability to pass safe driving session conducted by facility maintenance manager.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a long term care facility.
  • Prior experience working with patients with limited abilities.

Physical Requirements

  • Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
  • Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
  • Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.)
  • May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
  • For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing, and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
